Tomorrow, August 1st, Sight and Sound will announce the 2012 incarnation of their once a decade poll/list of the greatest films ever made. They will be announcing the Critics top ten list, and the directors top ten lists.

They have massively expanded the roster of both critics & directors polled this year: 2045 films were mentioned by the more than 846 critics polled. They will be announcing a full 100 film list (ala AFI's 100 film lists) from the critics poll in their magazine later this week.

Later this month, they will post the ballots of all the critics and all the directors polled.

http://www.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/sight-sound-magazine/polls-surveys/greatest-films-all-time-2012

On a previous incarnation of this forum we had a LONG running thread for a "Sight and Sound Challenge". As far as I know, Home Theater Forum was the only place that ever combined all the ballots from the critics and the directors into one meta list. From this meta list, which differed from the Sight & Sound official two top tens (of critics and directors, respectively), an extremely lenghthly list of all the films receiving at least two votes was compiled and some of the more mad regulars of the Movies forum attempted to see all/most of the films from the Sight & Sound 2002 meta list. I'll see if I can find the thread an bump it for posterity.

Yep, that was me who created that combined list. Took a long time. Not sure I'd want to put in the time again, but I'll do it if nobody else wants to.

I was thinking of creating a combined list from the soon to be published full top 100 of each of the directors and critics. On the linked BFI page, it tells us how many votes all the films on the critics top 50 received, so if they do the same for when they post a more extensive directors list, it should be easy to combine the two, then it's just a matter of tracking down many votes the films that don't overlap received from the other group.

It's incredible to see silent film so ascendant on the Critics list.

That would be MUCH easier than what I had to do in 2002, which was manually type out each critic's and director's top ten list separately in Word, then alphabetize them so that identical titles would be grouped together, and count them. Still can't believe it's been ten years. The new list is very exciting.

Only two from this Top 50 that I need to see
Sátántangó - At 450 minutes, I hope it's more Berlin Alexanderplatz and less Jeanne Dielman
Histoire(s) du cinéma - Appears to be a series of films by Godard, not currently available on Netflix. Stange that a set of different films would make it with the new rules about not combining series (Godfather, Three Colors, etc). I wonder how that rule affected Dekalog, if at all.
.....
Forgot to add Journey to Italy. I have it listed as Voyage to Italy on the 2002 list.
Also, I'd like to give a double thumbs up for the continued ascent of Sunrise in both the S&S and AFI lists of recent years.

I was planning to go through the entire list once this new one came out. I think only Martin actually went through all of them but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
With that said, I've only watched the first part of HISTORIE(S) DU CINEMA but if someone says this is one of the 50 greatest films ever made, my desire to go through that list goes down some. :)

I have to see Satantango and Histoire(s) du cinema as well as Jeanne Dielman. Goddamn long films, I don't really want to see any of them. :(

It looks like the top 100 is entirely manageable, someone has posted the list at another forum, but I am not going to post the full list here out of respect for Sight and Sound and the BFI. It's their material, they are choosing to make the top 100 available online on the 15th, and not until then because they want people to pay for the new issue, either at the newstands, or through their new app. I'd like to respectively ask that people in this thread also don't infringe on the BFI's purview and link to that list until they post it themselves online.

I've seen all of the top 50. SATANTANGO is a top 100 film for me. JEANNE DIELMAN is tough but very interesting. HISTOIRE(S) DU CINEMA was an utter chore, but I'm not a Godard guy.

I have a feeling I'll love Satantango, be indifferent to Jeanne Dielman (but exasperated at the length), and find myself aggravated by histoire du cinema but interact/engage with it the most.

I am just not looking forward to devoting a month to watching three films. :(

I've added the link to the directors page at the BFI that gives their vote totals, iirc, more directors--358--voted for the 2012 poll than critics voted for the 2002 poll.

HTF combination of the Sight and Sound Directors and Critics list:
Thanks, Adam! Wow, so "Kane" is STILL number two, even with the combined list! I wasn't sure it would be.

It's certainly an interesting list.
Just a few observations but......
VERTIGO: I don't know too many people who even feel this is Hitchcock's best film. Heck, I think most people prefer REAR WINDOW from just the Stewart/Hitch teamings.
2001: Again, I think I know more people who prefer other Kubrick films over this one.
APOCA NOW: Seems more people I know prefer THE GODFATHER. Speaking of which, seems like TG2 has become more of a favorite.
TAXI DRIVER: Again, it seems like more people would prefer GOODFELLAS.
MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA: Really????
A night or two ago I watched the second film in Godard's CINEMA series and while it was slightly better than the first, I still have to laugh and really wonder how so many people could consider it one of the greatest films ever made. I mean, better than INTOLERANCE, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, ON THE WATERFRONT or SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE? I'm just using these titles as they make up part of my own top 5 but those are films you rarely see anyone give a "low" score to while CINEMA is often bashed, not taken serious, couldn't get a release and it seems not too many even want to bother with it. I know this has a wide group of people voting but it's still shocking that there are so many Godard lovers who were able to get this film on the list while certain other titles didn't make it.

I like these lists. On August 22, I will make an ultimate list of movies based on this list and it will include all the movies that got 2 or more votes from BOTH the directors AND the critics. So then there will be no only-one-vote-from-a-group-randomness. This, I have done with the 2002 list already.

I will say this, while there are other Hitchcock films I enjoy more, Vertigo to me is Hitchcock's closest to perfect film. Every time I watch I rethink some of my ideas on the story; I find the acting is fantastic, the use of the camera, color and setting it be phenomenal. I won't deny that I enjoy the plot of North by Northwest more; or that (to me) "Trouble With Harry" is his most underappreciated work. But I come back to Vertigo repeatedly because of how well I feel the story clicks together, and that all the small pieces are so good.

The same generally applies with 2001. I would agree, there are other Kubrick films that I think are deserving, but to me, 2001 is an undeniable masterpiece of direction, beauty, cinematography as well as timing & pace.

The thing about the BFI list is it's a very "old boys" club. Look at the list, and you'll find the newest film there is Mulholland Drive, the only film since 2000. There are some changes I would make, but I can't fault any film on the list really. There are films I care for "more", and I sometimes think the only way to legitimately do this is to say "Top 50: Pre-1944" "Top 50: Post-1944" Because too much nostalgia and the praise of innovation when the format is new elevates films tha tI don't think otherwise would be there (IMHO)

The interesting thing about Kubrick, Ozu, Hitchcock, Welles, Kurosawa, Renoir, Murnau, Lang, Lean etc (and from the newer generation Scorsese, Spielberg, Coppola etc) is that they all made multiple films that are worthy of being included in 'The' top ten. With Kubrick, Ozu, Ford, Hitchcock, Welles & Renoir they benefit from having an extremely defined 'top' film.

Now this is always up for contentious debate, but everyone in the cine community (such as the critic voters) knows that Vertigo, 2001, Tokyo Story, Rules of the Game, The Searchers & Citizen Kane are considered the pinnacles of their directors career. Interestingly, I disagree with all these assessments except for Citizen Kane, that is Welles' best film. In fact, I would say most people do disagree with these assessments, Vertigo may have accrued 191 votes--but that also means that less than 20% of critics worldwide think that Vertigo is one of the Best films ever made or think it's Hitchcock's best film--basically disagreement is the rule not the exception, we just tend to filter the disagreement and call it agreement when we make these lists.

Things get trickier for filmmakers like Coppola and Kurosawa, Scorsese, Lean, Lang, Powell & Pressburger, Wilder etc. Their best film is still up for debate, is it Godfather 1 or 2 or maybe Apocalypse Now? Is it Raging Bull or Taxi Driver or maybe Goodfellas or Hugo or Departed? Is it Seven Samurai or Rashomon or maybe Ikiru or High & Low? Is it Metropolis or M or Mabuse? Red Shoes or Black Narcissus? Perhaps a Matter of Life & Death of Colonel Blimp? The Apartment or Some Like it Hot, or maybe Sunset Blvd?

It's actually these directors I've chosen that are more common. Having a singular film be the only thing that is beloved--and beloved universally--seems to be much more rare. The problem of Coppola is more widespread than we think

Critics will be terrified to include Spielberg films in their top tens until Spielberg dies. Hitchcock was a guilty pleasure for critics until the eighties, never was he considered to have real artistic merit until after he died, the same will be true for his heir. I've seen Jaws crop up on a number of directors lists that have been posted on the web and I expect it will place in the directors top fifty. Once Spielberg dies the hagiography will begin though and he'll get his due.

Personally I think it's a shame that the 'other films' of the directors with the singular masterpiece tend to get overshadowed. That's because I prefer How Green Was My Valley to the Searchers, Psycho to Vertigo, Grand Illusion to Rules of the Game, Paths of Glory to 2001, There was a Father to Tokyo Story. And so on and so forth.

To me, Psycho is Hitchcock's masterpiece. I think it's a flawless film while I found Vertigo with too many plot holes to be considered a perfect film.

One film that should not be on the list in my opinion is "Mulholland Drive". It is very pretentious.
I would include the following films: Napoleon, Bicycle thieves, Rashomon, Sweet Smell of Success, Andrei Rublev, The Conformist, Taxi Driver, Blade Runner, Pretty Village Pretty Flame and No Country For Old Men. Maybe you strongly disagree!

Hmm. I always feel with Vertigo that the narrative is it's own thing, while others nitpick plot issues, I find it completely rewarding and draw from it differently every time. Psycho is a great film, I enjoy it, but it's probably my fourth or fifth favorite Hitchcock. (Vertigo, North by Northwest, Room with a View are easily my top, then it drops to my next set)

But all that said, it's funny arguing between films that are still works of greatness decades later.. it's a bit like saying "I prefer this Monet over that one.." :)

Nitpick hasn't little to do with it, the plot has big holes in it like Stewart conveniently running across Novak again in a city the size of San Francisco. Furthermore, favortism is not in play here as Psycho is far from my favorite Hitchcock film, but it is clearly his best film in my opinion.
