Just read about this July 4th nationally televised event. Apparently a little brouhaha has followed. I could not identify Beyonce, or her voice, even if you held a gun to my head. But I'm all for dancing around graves. Just hope when I'm in the ground some young people will be dancing near mine.
There was a time when families gathered near the graves of their ancestors and picnicked.

As a patriotic American, I can't help but feel they disrespected Grant's Tomb. What's next, a video at Martin Luther King Jr.'s tomb? It's sad to see where our musicical industry has sunk to these days.

As a patriotic American,...
Sorry, I could have used some more adjectives! :b As an ex-Marine Viet-Nam vet....I just hope when I'm in the ground people will be doing some life celebrating dancing near my bones.

As a patriotic American, it makes me proud to live in a country where we have the freedoms we have and am glad we can celebrate in ways that we want to.

It's not about disrespect it's about celebrating our nations birthday and those that helped it develop.

I hope when I'm dead, people have a big party with lots of booze and skantily clad women. I don't want people to mourn my passing but to celebrate my life. I plan on having an open bar at my wedding (if that ever happens) and will put it into my will for my funeral.

Why doesn't someone ask Grant if he felt disrespected...oh wait, we can't.

One of his descendants is still around, if that matters to you:

'Ulysses Grant Dietz, the great-great-grandson of the Civil War hero and 18th president, said Saturday he didn't object as a rule to most live performances, as long as the tomb is carefully maintained. But he suggested organizers be more thoughtful.

"If they're doing a Fourth of July celebration and they're doing it at a grave of a president, maybe they should look a little more closely at what the performances are," Dietz said.'

Including others' freedom to have an opinion on any given event, right?
I never said that others couldn't have an opinion. What I tried to hint at is that this is not that big of a deal and people should lighten up. Grant is dead. Ok so he is a dead president and ex general, but I mean come on now. Everyone knows what he did and some attractive and young girl doing her act at the tomb doesn't delete from history what Grant did. When Grant was alive he was known to drink when not around his wife or when bored. "He was highly moral, though he was never prissy or preachy about it." Maybe some of the people complaining should take some lessons from how Grant carried himself and not try to push their ideals onto others.

In other words, "shut your hole if you don't like it"? That's... Preachy, innit? ;)

Your whole argument boils down to: "She's exercising free speech, so put a sock in it and get over it". Cute, but hypocritical.

I am not dead but she can dance on me any day:D

I have always read and watched anything about Grant since he had my first name.
He was seen as an average Joe and way more popular than Abe. He didn't even campaign for his own presidency and won by a landslide.
I think he would be honored and amused....only wishing he had been around to see it

Considering that he's famous for leading the war that helped free african-americans from slavery I think Grant might appreciate an african-american 20yr old millionare celebrating the nations independence.

Good grief, I give up. If anyone needs me I'll be doing a jig on Kennedy's grave.

I think you're ascribing too deep a meaning to a vapid spectacle put together by a TV network.
I think we have a winner.
While the meaning can be ascribed and revised for further self-importance after the fact, I'm sure that the network was strictly doing a ratings grab.

I'll put in my one cent. It was tacky and cheesy, and Beyonce probably couldn't tell you a thing about Grant (except where he's buried, and maybe not even that). She was there to sell records. The network wanted ratings.

Beyond that...I don't like it. Based on the intent, which was commercialism trading off of our past to make a buck in the basest way. But I won't lose sleep over it.

I see your frustration Ricardo (and I sympathize). But we have much bigger issues to worry about.

Take care,
Chuck
