When I read this thread's title, I knew you were the one posting it, Peter!

And, of course, no one ever said that exploring Mars would be risk-free. Interesting reading. I've read Wilford's stories many a time.

Before I lose sleep over the condition of Martial soil, I can't help but remember that we have problems closer to home. I just read an article in the current issue of Chemical & Engineering News (a publication of the American Chemical Society) on land and water in Anniston, Alabama that is contaminated with PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). It's very sad. The article shows a photo of a father and 3-year-old son who, with the rest of their family including four other children, live in a trailer home that lies on contaminated land. Very sad. :frowning:

Peter,
Since that's a copyrighted article, please post certain excerpts from the article with a direct link for others to read the article in it's entirety.

Crawdaddy,

For the 3 years I've been here many members including myself have posted articles from various publications rather than a direct link. I added the copyright logo at the bottom of the article (a lot of people don't bother). Posting excerpts is the same thing.

As far as I know, there has never been a cease and desist order from any publication to HTF not do to so. If it is now HTF's official policy to only allow a direct link, so be it. I'll refrain from doing so in the future.

Peter,
Again, I'm asking you to edit your post with a few excerpts and a link instead of the entire article. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

This article is of particular relevance to me, since me and my coworkers investigate the toxicity of soil all the time, and hexavalent chrome gets a lot of attention.
