The CD layer of the DSotM CD is worthless unless you like to hear the mastering techniques that are used for artists like Britney Spears applied to Pink Floyd.

The CD layer is designed to sound good on boomboxes and to casual listeners who don't notice or appreciate dynamics.

If the 'Gaucho' ad doesn't mention the DVD-A, you can assume that ad is largely/wholly funded by Sony.
Can someone throw me a bone here?

I went to Best Buy to purchase the SACD of Gaucho yesterday, but they didn't have it (I am SHOCKED, I tell you, SHOCKED!). The BB guy looked it up and said they have it listed as a DVD-A. I didn't know they had a DVD-A in addition to the SACD. But they did not have that either.

What I did find, but did not buy, was the DTS version, also stacked with the DVD-As (I freakin' hate that! Stick 'em in a sperate pile where they belong, rather than defiling the hi-rez section. And they are too expensive to boot).

So, are you saying that Gaucho exists on SACD, DTS, and DVD-A?

Brian,

SACD and DTS (for a few years now) are supposed to be available on the market now.

Latest on the DVD-A, is 12/16/03.

Note that the SACD and DVD-A come from PCM masters @ 24/96K.

Great!

Should provide for some lively debate when both versions are available, assuming they are both transferred to their respective mediums w/o alteration (other than converting to DSD for the SACD). Hopefully there is no monkeying around with EQ and what not, although I suppose none of us will be in a position to know for sure.

I suspect a lot of users will be buying both and doing their own comparo. Although my wife will think I am nuts, I think I will be among them!

Interesting. Now that I have the SACD and enjoy it, I don't think I will be able to justify buying the DVD-A, since the hybrid MC SACD provides everything I would want out of the title. But I would love to hear it to compare not only the sound but, of more interest to me, the MC mixes.
