i'm now an owner of the 'big 3' video game systems (ps2, gc, xbox), and i thought i would get your opinions of the best video game system. of course, this isnt only based on processing power alone. if it was, then probably xbox or gamecube would win. however, base your answers on how much fun you had (or have) playing them.

the main ones i can think of now are

    --atari
    2600
    5200
    7800
    jaguar
    lynx

    --colecovision
    --commodore 64
    --turbo grafx 16
    --neo geo
    --nintendo
    nes
    snes
    gameboy
    gameboy color
    gameboy advance
    n64
    gamecube

    --sony
    ps1
    ps2

    --sega
    master system
    game gear
    genesis/megadrive
    saturn
    sega cd

    --microsoft
    xbox

i cant think of any more off the top of my head, i'm sure i missed plenty. i'll start the voting and say my favorite video game system of all time is...

    nintendo entertainment system

This is tough, I loved a number of these systems. I like the hard drive in the Xbox, but nothing beats the NES for that cool old school feeling.

I'm shocked, yes shocked I say that you forgot the best Sega system ever the Dreamcast. I wish I had never sold my Dreamcast, IMO it is the most underrated system ever that had some great games.

So, I will cast my vote for my forgotten friend the Dreamcast.

    Long live Sega Bass Fishing.

Let me give the Atari 2600 (and it's big brother, the 7800) some love. The games and controls are beautifully simple, as well as random enough to be actual games as opposed to simulations. It was built around the two (or four) player experience, many of the games had numerous variations, and there's something very impressive about what its best people pulled out of it. Early games like "Pitfall!" and "Demon Attack" were just perfect, and it's astounding what "Solaris" managed later on.

I love my Dreamcast, but it's never matched the joy of playing "Circus Atari" with a paddle when those clowns start moving really fast.

The SNES had some of the greatest games ever made.. and I'm proud to still keep it in the front room.

    No contest for me: SNES

It has the best Mario game ever, the best Zelda game ever, my favorite soccer game ever (Perfect Eleven AKA International Superstar Soccer), my favorite baseball game ever (Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu), and my all-time favorite game, Super Mario Kart. Too bad about that horrible bazooka thing though....

I bought an NTSC system back then BTW (video games suffer from PAL slowdown instead of speedup), and the US system looks pretty weak IMO. A friend of mine imported the Japanese system (Super Famicom, which looked exactly like the European model) and I still consider that to be the ultimate games machine. Sounds a lot better than SuperNes or SNES too, this Super Family Computer. [IMG]

For me, nothing has topped the Super NES. As others have mentioned, it had a huge number of absolutely brilliant games. Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Metroid have already been mentioned, but there are other classics like F-Zero, Pilotwings, Super Castlevania IV, Super Mario RPG and Donkey Kong Country.
