The Royle Family, which has the best editing, and some of the best cinematography, writing and acting of any series ever. This is the benchmark for shows done in real time. You get a continuous, 30-minute slice of this families life every week. Brilliant stuff!
The League of Gentlemen, which is not for everyone, but side-splittingly funny if you love black humor.

Looks like I was way too late with The Sopranos as a nom—it had already been through the whole processes. In order to expand to a non-English speaking series,

Tale of the Genji, a long series from a longer novel. It was shown on PBS in the States around 1967. I’m not sure of how much earlier it was shown in Japan.
