Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow had a nifty title sequence. It played over footage of Depp travelling in a coach across the the countryside, and the title text took on characteristics of the envrionments shown (fading in & out like fog, etc.).

I meant the hand writing the names on the yellow pad. It's Crowe's hand doing the writing & he even erases & corrects Fran McDormand's name.

Beverly Hills Cop II (ahem)

Actually, I prefer no titles, like Die Hard 2, Predator 2, The Crow, stuff like that.

The best title sequence in a movie? The ones which are shown after the movie ends. Yeah, I already know the name of the movie I'm watching, and I don't need to be reminded when the movie starts.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly : those civil war photos combined with Morricone's great score really help set the mood

Vertigo: Saul Bass combined with Bernard Herrmann. Instant classic :)

Escape From the Planet of the Apes: Not sure exactly why I like this one - maybe the great Goldsmith score.

The Quiet Earth: A simple shot of the sun rising set to the great music of John Charles.

The Birds: No music, just sound effects as the birds fill the screen

I also love the title sequences of many of Toho's fantasy and sci-fi productions, mainly for the pounding Akira Ifukube scores. The Three Treasures is a great example.

Watership Down: More of a pre-title sequence this one. I really like the way the stylised animation of the El-ahrairah sequence dissolves into the more traditional look just before the titles.

It's safe to just say that any titles designed by Saul Bass should appear on this thread. Vertigo, Psycho, North by Northwest, It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, Spartacus, Alien (uncredited), Casino, Cape Fear. Some genuinely great sequences there. As someone commented on the Saul Bass biography on the IMDb:
It has been said that once you see the opening titles to a film that Saul Bass has done, you can walk out of the theatre because you know exactly what the film's about: he has shown you the entire thing in the first minute or so.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

- the opening montage of mall scenes scored by 'we got the beat' sets the mood for that film perfectly...

Sleepy Hollow: very elegant, great camerawork and music. And it's gorgeous on DVD.

2001: A Space Odyssey

Seven (Reznor!)

And almost everything else that's been mentioned.

Batman and Robin

With the red clouded backgrounds and the Robin and Batman logos coming together. Looked really cool and actually got me excited for the movie....

You can see clips of Saul Bass title sequences at http://www.saulbass.net/

If I had to pick, I'd say my favorite modern Saul Bass title sequence is Casino, and my favorite '60s sequence is Vertigo.

There are a number of good titles by Imaginary Forces (video clips here, too). They did the already mentioned Se7en, Charlie's Angels, Daredevil, and Spider-Man titles. The Island of Dr. Moreau titles are pretty incredible, as well.

I agree with PSYCHO and SUPERMAN, and I'll add PLANET OF THE APES and FRIDAY THE 13th PART 3 to the list. The latter of course, only because of the amazing use of 3-D.
