I am considering purchasing a set top box to get OTA high def TV. However, I'm not interested in Direct or Dish TV (don't want the expense to add the hardware to the other 3 sets in my house). I would like to get the RCA DTC-100, but am concerned that I won't get software upgrades without a Direct TV subscription.
    Any thoughts or opinions?
    Thanks!

you do not need a subscription to direct to get the upgrades, but you do need a dish to receive them. that could be a dish that is either temp or perminently mounted at your place, or you could run your receiver over to your buddies house and hook up to his dish just to take the upgrade.

...or you could get an already-upgraded (to latest v.4.37) DTC100 from copperbox.com (it's what I did cuz I can't put a dish up where I live).

no matter what you buy today, you should still be prepared to deal with the inevitable future upgrades.

How about the samsung SIRT150? It can be had for around 600$. It works more than well enough.
