My sister is turning 18 on thursday and will be starting her senior year the next week. I've put together a mix cd of an enormous variety of stuff for her 18th birthday but I figured a CD of really fun, sing along loudly with your friends, celebratory music (cheesy will work too) would be great as well.

Since everyone has a favorite song from highschool days I'm hoping I might get a decent variety of gems I or my best friend might not be able to brainstorm up.

As examples I'm thinking there are three obligatory songs:
Time of your Lives (yes, she loves dirty dancing, she's female and 18)
    Changes - Bowie
Joy to the World - Three Dog Night

this type of song I remember from my high school days would be
How do you like me now? - Toby Keith
All the Small things - Blink 182

    other possibilities
Take me home country roads - John Denver (I did say cheesy)
Back where I come from - Kenny Chesney (live version)
American Pie - Don McLean (long version naturally)
    Fancy - Reba Mcentire
My Next Thirty Years or I Like it I love it I want some more of it - Tim McGraw

Unlikely to include, but More recent stuff like:
    Drinking Bone - Tracy Byrd
    Beer Goggles - Neal McCoy
What was I thinking - Dierks Bently

Eve 6 - Here's to the Night - was a big-ish song near the end of my high school career. the song apparently has a different meaning then people took, but nonetheless it's one that seemed big.

John Mayer - No Such Thing
    U2 - Beautiful Day
Lenny Kravitz - Again - it can work... sort of.
    Switchfoot - Meant To Live
    Howie Day - Collide
    Snow Patrol - Chocolate
Gavin DeGraw - I Don't Want To Be

That's really all I could think of.
Granted some are from years after I graduated high school, but they're still in the style I think you're looking for. iTunes is your friend though, they have "iTunes Essentials" and have a "Genre's and History" section in which they go from year to year and by decade of the bigger hits.

    have fun.

I spent most of yesterday wracking my brain trying to figure out Here's to the night. I'd hear snatches of the music, no lyrics and couldn't place it. I feel really stupid.

Thanks I'll check some of these out. Yeah I'm using Itunes tools too. [IMG]

Don't worry Adam, I get that way too. I hear a song and I know that I know what it should be or snippets of a song and can't place it.

Are you looking for mostly recent songs or does it matter how far back you go, just as long as the song is somewhat good or something? I mean you could create a nice 2 - 4 disc collection if you wanted to. [IMG]

    I love making mix disc's.

I'm just going to throw some crap off the top of my head.

    Tuesday's Gone - Lynyrd Skynyrd
    Yesterdays - Guns 'N' Roses
    Kodachrome - Paul Simon
It's So Hard To Goodbye To Yesterday - Boyz II Men
It's The End of The World - R.E.M.
    Party Hard - Andrew W.K.
Don't Stop - Fleetwood Mac (just in case she drives a tank [IMG] )
Dance All Night - Ryan Adams and the Cardinals

    I'll come up with more.

Tuesdays Gone is one of my favorite songs but I think its too long for the cd.
Can't believe I forgot it's the End of the World

Doesn't matter how far back it goes, anything recent, she listens to quite a bit of country mixed with rock/pop

That's why you make 2 CD's. Might as well make it a double set.

First I think what you are doing is a great idea.

I like some of the choices previously mentioned. I would add These Are Days, by 10,000 maniacs.

Good luck and let us know what the final play list is.

Well, this is probably too sentimental, but I remember at an awards show towards the end of my time in high school, they played Billy Joel's "This Is the Time," which was pretty effective.
