My brother is looking for an a/v unit under $300.00 for college. Of course need DD and DTS but would like to buy as much quality high current power as possible. I was thinking maybe HK or Onkyo. Any advice? Any specific units you have or might prefer?
    Thanks in advance,
    BEN

If you can find an Onkyo TX-DS575x, that would be the way to go. Onecall.com's got some AVR-210s left for $325, but be aware that older HK AVRs (AVR-x00) have had problems in the past. Anyway, jandr.com probably has some Onkyos left. I'm sure if you browsed the classifieds here, at audioreview.com, and avsforum.com, you'd come across something sweet.

There is only 1 choice for a great receiver under $300: Yamaha 52XX or 54XX series receivers. They are sold at Best Buy and you can get a nice discount on an open box unit.

Try the 494 from Onkyo. It has not only DD and DTS, but Pro Logic II and usually retails for around $299. I love my 696 and have had good luck with Onkyo in the past. Good luck -he's picking a great time to be looking vs. two years ago!

The Onkyo 575x is $296.51 at onecall right now.
I purchased this one since my plans of the Denon 3801 where set back another year or so because of financial reasons. I have been nothing but pleased with it.

I had a Kenwood that was not bad for that price.

Thanks to everybody who replied! You've given us a lot of great ideas. We're especially interested in the Onkyo 575 and the Marantz units.
