Am putting together system primarily for HT but perhaps 30% music. Will have NHT vr3 fronts and vc3 center with vr3 rear speakers. Appreciate thoughts for receiver. Not necessarily looking to expand to 7.1 any time soon.

What's your budget? Do you need 5.1 inputs for multichannel sacd or dvd-audio? By "music," do you mean two channel stereo? Do you have a subwoofer?

Prefer budget up to $11-1200. No sub. Probably prefer two channel music but will try surround modes.

Those NHTs only have 6.5 inch woofers, you need a powered sub for the HT LFE channel. Something like the 12inch/150 watt Sony SAW-M40 for $199 retail at your local Best Buy would work in your budget.
I have owned most of the NHT models, you need a receiver rated at 120+ wpc, or 5 channel amp rated at 90+ wpc. Are you opposed to buying a 5 channel amp used? Forum members upgrading usually have a wide range of them for sale (in the classified forum). There are a couple of nice receivers with preouts for under $350 new that some guys are using with power amps:

Or you can get a used 5.1 prepro with dts under $500 (parasound avc1800, sherwood 9080, harman kardon signature 2.0, etc).
