Currently, I have a Yamaha HTR-5240 receiver. I've had it for over four years. I've been happy with it, but I want to move up to a higher sound quality ---the use is strictly for movies - DVDs, etc.

I was looking at the Yamaha HTR-5790 or 5760.

Anything else that I should look at? Again, I'm looking for a nice jump from where I am at right now with audio quality. I'm not concerned about gimmicks and functions, etc. --- just pure sound quality.

I have definitely been happy with my current one. I just want to move the the next step -- preferably with a Yammy. Am I likely to get better sound with the models I mentioned?

The 5790 should help give better sound as the YPAO does auto EQ set up. You should also consider the Pioneer 1014, which is what I'm using.
