I'm looking to buy a powered subwoofer for around $500. I don't really have the time nor the tools to build for a DIY...any advice.

    Search this forum for:

    RAVA

    HSU VTF-2

    SVS 2531pci.

You will find tons of info on these three highly recommended subs.

One more choice you might consider would be the Velodyne CHT-15.

SVS 25-31PCI tuned to 22Hz. In a reasonably-sized room it is all the sub most people will ever need and a lot more.

I have the 25-31PCi, and is the best sub I have ever used on my system. go for it, you wont regret it, but you could also consider 20-39 for $550.

Another vote for the Hsu VTF-2.
Love it! And a 30-45 day (depending on where you buy it) in home audition period.

DIY Tempest/Dayton DVC15" based sub. Compared to what the same money can buy commercially, nothing can touch DIY.
If DIY isn't an option and $500 is the upper limit. SVS 25-31PCi is my vote. If you can spend a little more I'd add the SVS 20-39PCi and Adire Dharman to the list. Acoustic Visions or Rutledge Audio may also be able to build you a rather nice sub in this price range.
And as always, the Hsu VTF2 and Adire Rava are worthy sub $500 options as well.
