Journey done nothing outside the United States. That rules them out I'm afraid.
Duran Duran
Prince
Depeche Mode
Huey Lewis and The News
Take your pick from that lot. :)

I can't believe theres been only one single mention of Dire Straits
"they did alright, too"
.. with the anthem of the MTV generation, no less.

Speaking of great bands that could not get arrested in America, how about the only band to come close to the Beatles popularity in England - The Jam
The last year they were together they won every award they could from NME and Paul Weller won "Most wonderful Human Being"

They broke up at the height of their popularity since, "They didn't want to turn into the fuckin Rolling Stones"

I usually think of pop as anything that isn't Jazz or Country.
Heck I think of pop as anything that isn't classical, so Pop includes Jazz, Country, and Rap. I personally gave up on pop when the Beatles broke up and haven't looked back since. Was there pop music in the 1980's? I never heard any of it.

I think you guys are confusing popular music with pop music. They are not the same thing.

Like hell it didn't!
