Get a top-rated model with the Faroujda de-interlacer. Used models: Panasonic RP82,XP30,XP50 or Denon DVD-1600. New models: Mitsubishi DD-8040 or Denon DVD-910.

Do you know how does the Toshiba SD4700 stacks up to?

I really would like to stay away from Panasonic.

The Toshiba is inferior, it has a cheap low-quality de-interlacer. You need to get a higher quality model with the Faroudja de-interlacer to rise well above the pack of the lowend models. The common players by Sony, Toshiba, and the newer Panasonic models all use inferior de-interlacers and have the chroma bug.
