Hello all and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays![IMG]
My new system consists of Kenwood VR 509, Onkyo DVD S555, HTD Level III Towers, surrounds, center, and Sub, to go along with my Hitachi Super Ultravision 60" Television.
Now, what DVD should I get at once! I want to test the full effect and feel for the speakers all around.
    Thanks,
    Paul[IMG]

I'll recommend a movie that hardly anyone ever does. "PITCH BLACK"...That will surely take your speakers for a ride!

I've bought and rented a ton of movies. Phantom Menace or the Matrix are the way to go in my opinion.

Das Boot sounds terrific for a movies of its age, but really, I wouldn't call it reference material. It has some cool surround effects, but they are more on the subtle side, hardly something to show someone who wants to be impressed.

    Pearl Harbor

    Episode I

    Saving Private Ryan

    U571

    ID4

    and countless others...

a search will help you a lot, as this subject pops up every week.

Sometimes subtlety can hit you like a hammer tho. The voice in the cell scene from "12 Monkeys" is quite amazing, and the Dolong Bridge scene in Apocalypse now" Redux is very haunting.

The D-Day sequence near the start of Saving Private Ryan. There are both DD and DTS versions of this DVD.

Yeah, go with Moulin Rouge. It excites the senses, both visually and sonically.

The Hi-Fi HT shop near me uses The Fifth Element Superbit quite often to show their products...and rightfully so. It's a beautiful movie with great audio.

THE ROAD TO UTOPIA!!!! Bob Hope and Bing Crosby at their best! You can't beat the power of Dolby Digital mono!
[IMG] Just kidding, I would try Toy Story 2, that's great demo material! It's my favorite for showing off my system.

I haven't seen the movie in its entirety yet, but when I was researching stuff, I heard Titan AE at a local shop, and it was AWESOME! Once my subwoofer arrives(grrr...), I will rent it for sure.

Here are two of my favorites that will "blow you and your friends' doors off":

    * DTS track on Twister. Just play the opening tornado scene. Natually, the other tornado scenes work very well too. This movie makes an awesome use of the surrounds.

    * DTS track on Saving Private Ryan. The opening 30 minutes is intense visually, but the audio is intense too.

Another scene I like is in Mission: Impossible when Tom Cruise ("Ethan Hunt") and Jon Voight are fighting on top of the train towards the end. The surround effects when Ethan's tie and jacket blow off are pretty cool. The whole scene is great eye and ear candy.

My favorite is U571 - The chapter called "Depth Charged". I use it so often my daughter is sick of hearing it.

How much did JP3 suck? More than JP2? JP1? JP1 was actually watchable IMO as far as Dinosaur movies go.
Is JP3 a better demo than JP1 for audio? I know there must have been significant strides in CGI technology in the past few years, but I don't think there have been parallel advances in audio. Is JP3 in EX? Would that make it a better demo than JP1?
Should I just rent it? [IMG]
