Well Lew my comment wasn't directed at you or anyone specifically & I certainly wasn't trying to single anyone out in order to belittle them.

Lets just say IMO there are some fine Drama films being listed under A/A that are only marginal action/adventure films.

There are plenty of examples I could give but I won't as

A. Its all just a matter of opinion
B. I highly doubt I'll change your or anyone else's mind

Now just for the sake of debate (just listing these films is getting rather dull :) ) I'll throw out one example:

The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp - which is a great film that I like enough to own so you can pass on the merits of the film itself.

A Great Drama = yes, A Great Romance = yes, An Epic = sure, A Great action/adventure film = eh.

Now based on the criteria I listed previously (or perhaps you have your own definition), maybe you could explain how this is (In Your Opinion) one of the Top 3 Action/Adventure films from the 40's.

I'm very interested.

Jim, no way did I think that you were singling anyone out. You might be surprised about changing minds however. The Red Shoes as a musical or not, is an example.

As for me, I’m having a hard time separating out films that I want included (i.e. ‘Red Shoes’) and getting them into a reasonable category. I am putting Bride of Frankenstein into the SiFi category, so I had room in the horror category for three others that I thought merited inclusion for one reason or another.

As for ‘Blimp’, I gave this some thought. I think that it well fits into the ‘Adventure’ category, based on the definition you provide. The good colonel has a life where he experiences the Empire from its height (the Boer War is maybe not the true height, but its close enough) through its decline and fall (WWII being the beginning of the end for the British Empire).

He participated personally in all of this—and was in a sword fight to boot, lost the fair lady and won another.

An exciting story? In my opinion, yes.

New experiences and exotic locales—again, yes.

And so on.

I admit that the action and the adventure is more subdued than those in a more conventional ‘adventure’ film, but for me, it still fits nicely within the definitional framework.

Perhaps I am putting some of the drama, romance into the adventure category, but not the epic portion. That I think fits well.

I’m not sure that I can defend that choice as one of the top three—but in many cases (and this is one), I’m trying more for representative films than top (though the choices still have to be in my overall top category). Now I’ve not achieved this in every case, but it is something I’m attempting—and I still make changes after the fact, as it turns out I’ve forgotten an obvious choice.

Understandable as I'm guilty of the same thing. As there is no Suspense/Thriller category I've been dumping those under Mystery. Also 30's Sci-Fi has extremely slim pickings so I've also opted to reserve some Sci-Fi-ish Horror films to fill in the gaps. Though instead of Bride it'll be the first Frankenstein & two others.

I used as a rationale the word or.

It was action or adventure, not action and adventure. :D

I’d agree that ‘Blimp’ is pretty short on action.

and or or make no difference. Action & Adventure are two birds of the same feather. Both are visceral experiences that immerse the viewer into the action. You can't call a film with little/no action scenes an Adventure tale. It's called a Drama.

If we aren't going to stick to genres then what little point there is to this thread is gone.

Fuck it then.

Ok, you got me. That plus looking at Brook's list, I overlooked a superior choice.

A correction George:

70s action/adventure

Apocalypse Now
Barry Lyndon
Aguirre The Wrath Of God

I don’t think that you will find fault with this categorization. We will just have to disagree on ‘Blimps's suitability as an adventure. At least we agree as to its merits as a film. :emoji_thumbsup:

WTF?
Should we then negate Dr Strangelove as a comedy? If anything I should be chastised for the 2 Adventure films that I included under Drama. :D

I do find it ironic that whenever there's an HTF genre poll/tournament the only time there's any kind of outcry is when the topic is Sci-Fi.

When it comes to any other genre & people are listing stuff from left field = nobody cares

Include Star Wars in a Sci-Fi poll/tournament & all hell breaks loose with numerous definitions of what is true sci-fi. Whatever ;)

As I said before - Fuck it - I'll just mosey on over to my patch o' turf, start grazing & join the rest of the herd.

Just call me Jim the black-sheep from now on. :)

I encourage discussion of genres, but please let's all remember that there are no right answers and it's all in fun.

For what it's worth, I don't necessarily agree with all of Lew's choices, of for that matter with many of the genre characterizations that have been made. But as I said at the beginning, I'm not going to try to police these.

As for action vs. adventure, they can be a single genre, or separated out. I can't necessarily give a definition, but if I were doing so, here are some examples of how I'd do it, but it's just my opinion.

Action:

The Train
Die Hard
Air Force One
Enemy of the State
Speed
Lethal Weapon
The Road Warrior
Goldfinger
Hard Boiled
The Killer
The Dirty Dozen
The Great Escape

Adventure:

Raiders of the Lost Ark
The African Queen
Davy Crockett & the River Pirates
Fellowship of the Ring
The Adventures of Robin Hood

But again, the lines are fuzzy, which is why I usually just put them together. :)

EricG, You may want to rethink The Outlaw Josey Wales, it was released in '76. Otherwise, I'd have included it myself.
