    One good sleeper sci-fi film would be Woody Allen's "Sleeper"

    Sorry for being a bit anal but I don't think Dark City or Gattaca were exactaly what you would describe as being films of "modest budget" whitch is what the topic starter was asking for.

    Silent Running was awesome, that was my first exposure to sci-fi as a kid. That and some movie that I saw on TV, "Marooned". I also liked "Liquid Sky"

    are you talking about low budget. then alien the terminator, ect. but if you are talking about movies that did not do well then The Quiet Earth, Cube

    Alien actually had a reasonably high budget for the time (not huge like Superman or Star Trek: TMP, but not tiny either).
