and no, the "Evil Dead" films don't count since techically, that involve demon possesion.
I'll go out on a limb and say Dan O'Bannon's "Return of the Living Dead" is the best ever.
Romero bores me to tears, overly serious, laughable make-up (mostly in "Dawn of the Dead".)

Dead Alive (AKA Braindead) - simply the funniest and goriest zombie movie I've ever seen.

    "Party's over!"

I would say definatly Return of the Living Dead is my all time favorite. It's the zombies themselves that make this film so terrifying, unlike Romero's zombies, who are very easy to avoid, you can just walk right by them, the zombies in 'ROTLD' will RUN after your ass, and tackle you to the ground like an undead football linebacker, tear open your skull, and have your grey matter for lunch!!
Now THOSE are zombies to fear, you have to run for your life from those!
Second would be Dawn of the Dead, a truly terrifying vision of America, if I may borrow Roger Eberts quote.

Redneck Zombies. Easily the greatest motion picture ever made (Next to Hell Comes To Frogtown).

Dawn of the Dead, easily the best and most enjoyable, the 'Aliens' of zombie flicks. [IMG]

I'll also have to go with Dead-Alive! Truely funny and gory... the best.
"I kick ass for the lord!"
and just to "one up" Julie:

Its a damn hard decision, so I'm gonna have to cheat. For me, its a four way tie between Re-Animator, Return of the Living Dead, Day of the Dead, and Dellamorte Dellamore (aka Cemetery Man). I've seen tons upon tons of zombie films, and the absolute WORST would have to be Zombie Lake! Ugh!

Lucio Fulci's Zombie. I also like Night Of The Living Dead (both the original and the remake) and Dead-Alive/BrainDead (the unrated version).
I don't get the fuss about Dawn Of The Dead. I thought it was an alright movie, but c'mon! Does anyone find people with blue paint smeared all over them scary? [IMG]

Among the too few Zombie movies I've actually seen, I'd have to vote for Peter Jackson's uncut "Braindead" (known as Dead Alive in the US I believe).

Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things gets my vote. This flick was so bad it was good. It was so far out, it was in. You get the idea[IMG] .

I couldn't help but notice that Dawn of the Dead is running away with things here. Dead Alive is a close runner-up, but where is my support for Redneck Zombies. C'mon people, if Redneck Zombies faced off against those Dawn pansy zombies, it would be a laugh. That evil monkey from Dead Alive, might put up a good fight though.

P.S. and on a personal note, its not cool to pee on people's moms.
