While I really don't want to buy Audiovox anything, I might have to break down and get the one they have on clearance at Target for $399.
I remember a few months back, Fry's seemed to have regular deals for $499 on a few different models. I thought they had a Toshiba model at that price, does anybody remember which one?
Any other recommendations? And no, I don't want a laptop, and I don't want to spend more than $500 before tax.

I had the Audiovox, but recently sold it and bought a Panasonic. The Audiovox was fine except for one thing - the battery life was terrible. Not nearly enough to get through a movie.
If that doesn't bother you, go ahead and get it. But I'm really pleased with the Panasonic that arrived this week (from New York, no less!)

Thanks for the info on the Audiovox battery... that would certainly be a problem if you can't even get through one whole movie!
I think I may end up waiting another month or two to see if any deals pop up before the holidays... and if not, maybe some deals will pop up after the holidays!

My advice ... dont blow $400-$500 on something thats half-rate. Hold a garage sale if you must, but find a way to raise another $80., then buy the Pioneer PDV-LC10 from Heartland America . For $579.99 (get a club membership --> 600+40-60).
    You wont be sorry.
My second choice ... Get the Sharp 8" for $550. at Costco.com .

not going to go into any details on which player to buy since I have no personal knowledge on any of them (my corporate laptop has a dvd-rom in it). But I've seen some CRAZY deals on Ubid lately for portable DVD players. Like $100-200 cheaper than the cheapest buy-it-now pricing I can find on ebay (which is my current market value judge).

I've got the Toshiba 1200 the one from fry's. Got it for $400something and like it a lot. The battery is hard to locate, if you want extra battery life.
But the unit is nice. I don't use it as much as I could, but it has a great picture at 5.8". They do have a newer one with a larger screen.

    Suggestion...
I don't know about portable DVD players, as I too, have a laptop.
After browsing ebay a bit the other day....looking for a second laptop for traveling, I couldn't believe some of the smokin' deals. Most that I found have DVD drives in them and you can pick up a Pentium 500-600 for $600-$800! Forget the portable DVD player...pick up a used laptop w/DVD and you'll have a sweet set-up for movies, e-mail, web, etc. all in one little package.
    Just a suggestion.

Jeremy- i completely agree. invest a little more $$ and get something with more functions that has a bigger screen. granted it is a little larger and such, but wouldnt you sacrifice that convenience for more options? i would do it for just the larger screen. a laptop is the way to go IMO.

Somebody has to pay for retail businesses to let us walk in and audition high quality equipment side by side with our own dvd's and movies. I don't mind paying a premium to support this kind of service and convenience, I wish others would consider this when buying discounted b-stock merchandise from shady internet dealers.
