I just purchased a new system - Energy Encores and Onkyo TX-DS595. I like it very much so far (waiting for the speakers to smooth out a bit after the break-on period).

Please recommend DVDs that will allow me to give the sound system a workout. I want to see what kind of the sound I can get out of this 5.1 system, especially those DVDs that will highlight sub woofer and the surrounds effects.

    Thanks,

    David Benus

My personal favourite for surround demo is the bullet-dodging scene from The Matrix. I'm sure that there are other more recent releases with prominent surround effects, but I stick with this one.

The Phantom Menace is an obvious sound demo disc.

However, I can't really think of another right now...

I would recommend Super Speedway...this has never failed to impress. Full range sound is used throughout the movie, and in all speakers. Give it a look!

    Regards,

Saving Private Ryan has a ton of directional effects, The Phantom Menace, The Matrix. Definitely check out saving private ryan though (both the beach landing in the beginning and the tank battle towards the end).

BTW, I just bought the same receiver and I love it!

Gladiator and Toy Story 2 both have some scenes that will give your system a workout. Check out the Germania battle scene in Gladiator, and of course the first 5 - 10 minutes of Toy Story 2 - great sub action there.

Mask of Zorro is a great movie for its generally very good surround effects throughout. The new Planet of the Apes also has some very good moments in the beginning. True Lies is another that I like for its generally pleasing surround effects.

Face/Off and Sleepy Hollow both have great Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks.

Air Force One. Lots of gunfire and the end with the air battle. Unbelievable effects.

How could you forget "the Haunting". Another flick to show off DD-EX, if you have it anyway.

I'd have to second Gladiator. The first battle is great - lots of surround action with the arrows flying, etc. The Battle of Carthage scene is great too. For a subwoofer workout, I'd recommend The Phantom Menace or the beginning of Toy Story 2. SVS has some others listed on their website that are also good.

My new favorite DVD for showing off sound is The Fast and the Furious. Really gives your system a workout.

I would agree with all of the above, but no one has mentioned the fifth element. That has a ton of ambient and directional effects.

Again, the ones already mentioned are excellent choices. I'll throw out Kiss Of The Dragon, there is a ton of surround activity.

I am not sure if it was just the topic of the movie itself but Super Speedway never did much for me. Yes, sound wise it was good but I was quite uninterested in the film so I think that experience just left me finding the surround boring also.

Alot of people like this disc so try it for yourself.
