Video: The Fifth Element, Superbit Edition. Toy Story 2.

Audio: Titan AE, DTS. Star Wars Episode 1.

It's a tough call and depends heavily upon what equipment that you have in your system.

There are 2 that come to mind. Demolition High and Demolition University. Both staring Corey Haim.

The Fantasia 2000 "showcase sampler" serves no purpose I can identify except as demonstration material, for which it is quite nice. Depending on your guests' capacity for carnage, Saving Private Ryan Omaha Beach sequence is the most jaw-droppingly dynamic movie soundtrack demo. Your best bet is to show them a clip from a film they really like unless it is a disc with middling to low quality audio-video. For instance, my dad likes Topkapi, but I would not use that disc to sell him on the format. My mom likes West Side Story, and that would work like a charm. [IMG]

You're going to get quite a few differing opinions with the so-called Ultimate Demo DVD. A great one that I often use is Saving Private Ryan, the DTS version. Amazing bass, great directionality, good use of the rears, and several pretty cool battle scenes to choose from.

    Highlander : THX version! [IMG]
I would break out the following:
Fifth Element - pick a scene
Heat - Bank Robbery in total
SPR - Omaha Beach if they aren't queasy

I also suggest the bank robbery scene from Heat. It's excellent HT demo material that doesn't get mentioned too often.

What makes these people so hard to impress? Do they have an overwhelming love for LD?

    Lets dive down a bit:
If they ask (as mine did): "Why do you need so many speakers?", I fire up chapter 15 of Star Trek:Insurrection, turn off the TV and watch them. This scene starts with a boob joke, then drone flyers appear. After a minute, peoples heads are turning to follow the swirling sounds.
If they ask about: "Why is DVD better than tape": I fire up Shrek and let them see the Karokie dance party, or the animated interviews (none of which were seen in the theaters, but may/may not be on the video tape).
Or if they are Sci Fi fans, I pop in Terminator 2 and select the extended version & jump to the gas station scene, or the 10 deleted scenes in Alien, or the bloopers track on Charlie's Angels.
Basically, people with DVD players get to see parts of movies other people dont.

    Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition

    DTS track.

I also reccomend O Brother Where Art Thou?, Cast Away, Snow White, and City Lights.

City Lights has to be the ONLY silent film on DVD with a PCM surround score. Talk about full sound...

If you want to win them over from VHS to DVD, I would have to suggest the following.
Set up two TV's next to Each other. One with the VCR, and one with the DVD, obviously. Put in Ghostbusters for both, or any other movie with bad pan and scan transfers. Set 'em up so they run almost simultaneously, and watch their jaw drop [IMG].
Either that, or just choose their favorite movie and do the above..

I have to also second Episode 1. It was always an attention grabber in the HT demos in the store setups.
