The Panasonic DVD-RV31 is about $180. Spend the 30 bucks. Tell your friend that's better performance than any player that he can buy under $200 period.

Hmmmm....you can snag a Toshiba SD-1700 for about that. You might even be able to get an entry-level Pioneer at that price range. But I second Sean-D's suggestion. Recommend to your friend to spend the extra $30 for the Panasonic DVD-RV31. It's an excellent player.

I second the panny, but if your friend will only spend $150 then tell him that bestbuy.com has the Toshiba SD1700 for $142.

If you can still find the Pioneer DV-343, some dealers should have it for $150-160. It was discontinued recently. In the under-$200 category, I am biased towards Pioneer. Check OneCall (1-800-340-4770) or J&R Music World (1-800-221-8180) to see if they still have the '343. They should have the best prices among authorized dealers.
As another option, and if your friend can stretch his or her budget to around $200, the new Pioneer DV-440 looks to be a nice player. It is a small player (only 2.25" high) and offers a 24/192 Burr-Brown DAC and playback of MP3-encoded CDs. The '440 may be your best bet. Check it out on www.crutchfield.com . OneCall and J&R Music World may be cheaper than Crutchfield.
