I don't think it really matters, pretty much all DVD players with S-Video will look great.

Component of course can (some will argue) give you a BIT better picture if you have a nice TV to take advantage of it.

I have a pioneer elite pro 99. From what I've read it's one of the best pictures for an rptv that there was before component and hdtv. I just wondered what dvd would be best for it for less than $500, or would it matter since it doesnt have component and is not hi def?

I wouldn't worry so much about it...just pick out a DVD player that fits your budget, and has the features you like.
