Thanks to advice from the great people who participate on this board (particularly those who help us newbies), I'm 90% sure I'll be getting the Panasonic CP72. From all the reading though, I'm just a bit concerned it won't be able to take full advantage of the new TV's 16:9 squeeze mode since I won't be using the player in progressive mode. Are my concerns valid, or should I just go get this player?

Thanks!

If you like the Panasonic go buy it. Progressive mode is for digital sets and not applicable here. What you will need to do to employ your set's 16 x 9 mode is: Set the player's menu for a 16 x 9 TV. Your set will automatically squeez down on the 480i image you'll get. 480p is for digital sets, so leave the player set for interlaced. Best wishes!

Essentially, what Rachael said. But I'm not certain the 27-inch WEGA locks onto a 16:9 signal automatically. Mike might have to select the 16:9 mode manually from the Sony's menu. Otherwise, Rachael is correct. The 16:9 mode in this case has nothing to do with progressive scanning.

I picked up a Toshiba SD-2800 for $116 to go w/my 32" Wega and it looks great. I have to access the 16X9 squeeze through the menu but its a small price to pay.

Hey, I have a Tosh 2800 in my bedroom system. Nice little player. It may be flimsy in terms of build quality, but the images it produces are nice.

Funny.

I have a SD-2800 and am currently running it to a 27" Wega.

Depending on your Wega model, the 16:9 mode may have to be set manually ... or not. The FS100s, which don't have PIP, 3D filter and some audio differences also don't autodetect 16:9.

The FV300s, IIRC, autodetect 16:9.
