i'd like to buy one of those disc labeling systems, where you print out the labels and put them onto a cd or dvd. are there any ones that are better, or worse than the rest? any good deals? thanks

I can't tell you which is the best because I've only used two.

I've used a commercial inkjet printer designed to print directly on disks. It was pretty cool, but it probably costs more money and desk space than you're willing to give up. Besides, I can't remember the product name.

The other one I've used is the CD Stomper, which I've been perfectly happy with for home use.

I use Avery labels along with the DesignPro software that's included in some of their packages. Thr labels are designed to be applied with the disc in the jewel case (both regular and slim), and the software allows you to combine various elements together such as images and text to produce a single label. It'll even create circular text along the edge of the label.

It's a pretty decent deal considering you're only paying for the labels. And the software works with just about every product they manufacture.

And adhesive labels are known to reduce the longevity of discs.

not to doubt you, but how do you know? i dont want these discs to be junk in a few years, so i'd like to use a solution that doesnt damage the discs in any way.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology's Convergent Information Systems Division did a several year study on digital preservation and published a 50 page report a while back.

It talks about the effects of light, moisture, radiation, scratches, marking, adhesive labels, and even playback on the discs.

The 50 page version can be found here:
    http://www.itl.nist.gov/div895/caref...dlingGuide.pdf
(see page 23 for label specific info [page 31 on the pdf])

A one page abstract and summary can be found here:
    http://www.itl.nist.gov/div895/carefordisc/onepage.pdf

The industry conglomerate "Optical Storage Technology Association" also agrees:
    http://www.osta.org/technology/cdqa11.htm

Similar information has been published alll over the place:
    http://www.informationweek.com/story...5800263&pgno=1
    http://www.k-par.com/downloads/techi...discs%20V5.pdf
    etc, etc, etc

THE CD-R FAQ mentioned this problem several times:
    http://www.cdrfaq.org
    Section 7-5 and 7-7

Also, nearly every disc manufacturer and drive manufacturer has suggested against using labels on anything you plan to keep for more than 3 years. Most say right on the case to not apply adhesive labels.

    How's that? [IMG]
