The HP iPod is a bit cheaper than its Apple-only branded iPod...on average about $20 less. If you have to have the Apple-only one, then I reckon the best you could do is probably save on sales tax and/or free shipping (if offered)...

Well, here is a really Big Deal - too bad the best deal is over. 40Gig HP iPod for $280! Too bad we missed it....

But $349 isn't too bad.

wow that deal was a scorcher, brandon. too bad we missed it. i found that the HP branded ipod is about the same price as the normal one. it doesnt matter either way which one i get, the HP one would save me a step if it is pre-formatted for windows. i'm going to look into the student discount through apple, hopefully it is still available.

looks like the apple store with the student discount is the best deal, especially when you throw in a free engraving. $269 before tax, free shipping, $282.45 after tax. it is at least $291 shipped at any other place i can find.

Amazon and Buy.com have good prices on the HP version, and those sites will quite often have additional digital coupons for money off a purchase. I bought my 40GB iPod from Buy.com over a month ago. With a $20 off coupon, I paid $347 shipped.

I think the info in the Dealnews link may not have been entirely true; I went to SmartBargains (the site actually offering the iPod deal) right before 10 am EST and kept clicking and looking right through for at least 10 minutes afterward--no iPod in sight, not even a placeholder link for it saying that it's out of stock or something like that.

And yes, the Dealnews info did state that there would be 25 available every day starting at 10 am EST up until 12/10 (today). Looks like somebody got misinformed...oh well.:frowning:

Well, this isn't exactly a "deal", but if you open a checking account with Citibank, fund it with $2500 and pay at least 2 bills online per month for 12 consecutive months, you get a free iPod mini. (You get the mini after the first month.)

More details here.
