    I guess I wasn't done...

I grabbed The Patriot & Fifth Element Ultimate. I had to go to customer service to get FEU @ $9.99 but once I showed them it was a superbit title I got it.

Amazing: I just received a shipping notice for my backorder-extended-multiple-times online purchase of the 3-pack (Fith Element/Desperado/Crouching Tiger) briefly priced at $9.99 before selling out (no longer available). I wonder, will I actually get what I ordered or will those weisenheimers send me a 3-pack of VHS tapes? [IMG]

On a visit to my local BestBuy earlier tonite I noticed the Superbits priced back to $9.99 on many titles. The selection has thinned out, but only a few were still at $23-24, like Vertical Limit. They had at least 10 titles at 9.99 and alot of copies of them. I saw Patriot, Underworld, Fifth Element and probably 6-7 other ones.

I finally ordered Starship Troopers for $9.99 (online). This concludes my Superbit purchases. I went to BB last night and most SB are still $9.99. So if you are interested, they are still there.

I bought Quick and the Dead & Starship Troopers online last month. ST shipped quickly but Quick and the Dead just shipped. It is my last purchase in the $9.99 SB deal.

    Thanks!

    I picked up:

    Lawrence of Arabia
    Vertical Limit
    Underworld
    Resident Evil
    The Fifth Element

The kicker is I have not seen any of these! (only parts of a few that were on TV)

Our local BB in Bright has a ton of SB titles. I picked up Spiderman and Underworld. I already had quite a few because for some reason this BB seems to carry more, if not all, SB titles.

No one else I've visited had more than a couple but they are always stacked with them.

After looking at the recent announcement of Blu-Ray titles the price drop makes sense now. Seemed like the majority were titles that got Superbit treatment.

And they are still $9.99. I got Spider-Man 2 today for that price. They had one right next to it for $22.99, but I'm no fool. [IMG]

I'm sure they both would ring up at the $9.99 price point.

I have several Superbit titles and there isn't any real inherent requirement that there be any difference. Superbit is going to be good, that much I accept. I did some bitrate comparisons between a few non-Superbit DVDs that I thought were very good and the average bitrate was higher for the non-Superbit titles. It is probably safe to say that a Superbit title will be better than a non-Superbit previous release of the same title by the same company. To me, it just seems that Superbit was a failed marketing attempt and consumer confusion caused more negative association with the label than was gained by any belief of superiority.

Went to my local best buys and probably bought way too many superbit DVDs. I can easily justify some of them because they replace VHS tapes for less than buying non-SB DVDs. I have never owned a SB dvd before this past week. Now I own...

    MIB
    5th element
    knights tale
    lawrence of arabia
    mask of zoro
    snatch
    gattaca
    swat
    johnny mnemonic
    xxx
    das boot
    spiderman
    spiderman 2
    hook
    underworld
    guns of naverone
    black hawk down
and I found Panic room at walmart for $5.50

Still up in the air about getting the following, I proably should since I have seen them all in the local stores, but with building the theater, buying a projector, etc. it is getting to be an expensive month.

    Air Force One
    Vertical Limit
    Cliffhanger
Resident Evil - never saw the movie
Legends of the Fall - never saw the movie
    The Dark Crystal
    Labyrinth
Once Upon a Time in Mexico - never saw the movie
    Desperado
    The Patriot
    Hollow Man

And I have yet to see Starship troopers anywhere but would love to get one.

    Problems with the Superbit line:

    1. Charge a premium for giving less, no extras
    2. Charge a premium for something that should have been done on the initial release, less filtering, higher bitrates
    3. Break your own brandname rules, no extras on movie disc (Panic Room had a trailer, Spiderman R1 had a commentary)
    4. Waste available bitrate on the same information, dts and dolby 5.1 (they should have done either dts 5.1/dd2.0 or just DD5.1)

I didn't mind spending $9.99 on most of these titles, but I only bought a few of these before the markdown due to the reasons I listed above.

I never knew what the technical differences were between superbit and regular movies untill I started seeing them for $9.99. All I knew in the past was that there was a $22 version of a movie and a $35 or more version of the movie. Now it is the opposite, I can replace some of my VHS tapes with superbit for less than buying the "regular" movies with all the extras... and to be honest I have never listened to a directors commetary and at most watch the deleted scenes and bloopers within the extras.
