Hey lads, long time lurker's first post here....

I've recently purchased a new 7.1 receiver and given my old 5.1 receiver to my brother but as i'm still quite happy with my Paradigms, he needs some speakers now.

He's on a tight budget and we need some recommendations for a complete set (5.1) of speakers >$500
Keep in mind his HT room is huge due to having an open concept home.

Any suggestions short of spending more are appreciated.

4 Polk Audio R150 bookshelf speakers, $99 per pair at Crutchfield
1 Polk Audio CSR center speaker, $99 at Crutchfield
1 Velodyne VX-10 powered subwoofer, $170 at Vann's

I'm running a 5.1 set-up using the Polks and am very happy with the SQ.

I recently purchased a jbl venue kit from bh photo
they have several different sets of 5.1 speakers, one with 4 towers, one with 4 satellites, and yet another with 2 towers and 2 surrounds that i purchased at 532. They sound great especially for the price.

4 Polk Audio R50's (tower speakers) from Frys for $60 each. (cannot post links yet (until I get at least 10 posts, just go to frys.com and search for r50.)

Pick up sub for the $250 you have left over (run with a phantom center for now) You are better off not going any lower on the sub and doing a phantom center than adding a center and getting a sub that might as well be phantom.

The towers look nice and will fill large spaces well. They are from Polks lowest line. They sound decent but for critical listening the highs are rather smeared in my opinion but the bass and mids are quite nice. For $60 each, they are a heck of a bargain.

Michael

Edit - if you jump quickly - frys has the monitor 50's on sale for $80 each. A very good price for a speaker of that quality.
