I have a friend looking to get a budget home theater system for about $300. He already has a Panny DVD player to pair with it, so he needs a receiver and speakers (5.1, including sub). My tastes and budget lie with more high-end stuff, so I have no idea what performs well in this price range. Can anybody give me some ideas?

    Thanks,
    Jay

Go to shoponkyo.com and check out the refurbished HTS650. This system runs around $300 and has nice sound for the money.

    Try H/K or Denon.

Thanks guys. I recommended a couple Denon and Onkyo systems. They were closer to $400, but $300 is pretty tough to hit.
