Some of you probably don't know who Mr. Carter was. He was a brilliant musician, composer, arranger and bandleader. One of the greats along with Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Here's a brief announcement on his passing. His website, www.BennyCarter.com issued the following statement:

Benny Carter died peacefully early Saturday morning at Cedars-Sinai
hospital in Los Angeles after a brief illness. Although physically
weak, he remained completely lucid and enjoyed speaking with many of
his friends worldwide over the past few weeks. The funeral service
will be private but we will post information concerning upcoming
memorials. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Morroe Berger - Benny Carter Jazz
Research Fund, Institute of Jazz Studies, Dana Library, Rutgers
    University, Newark, NJ 07102.

Once again, sad to hear we've lost another of the great jazz players. The more I learn about swing music the more I come to realize the gratitude that we owe them for their great musical talent and the joy they brought to our nation that was struggling with a great depression and later with World War 2.I guess to alot of folks back then, the music was about the only thing that was motivating the people to get them through. Today's music falls far short in comparison. R.I.P. Benny.
