Wow. You might as well have posted porn.
Bespin has too much of that CGI shiny look...that needs to go.

What's really amazing is that now we're at the point technologically where that "CGI shiny look" is actually an issue.
It's even more astounding when you consider that it's a first generation title.

Posted about these new shots in the latest Rogue Leader thread over in Software. Truly one STUNNING looking game... How any star wars fan will resist the gamecube come November is beyond me.

The thing that you need to keep in mind about this game is that the X-Box literally can't handle it. Also, the game has 5.1 sound, which is great considering it will run at 60 fps with those gorgeous graphics. The GameSpot review said it was good in the gameplay deparment, too. I can't wait to see the X-Box try to beat this.

Me again. Just looking at all this again and have got to ask, HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?! There was once a time I thought the death star attack/trench run was on the SNES Super Star Wars was the best thing ever. Never in my wildest dreams could I have pictured such visual Star Wars videogame perfection!

Geez, Dan, I figured you'd be asleep by now after getting your question in on the Fox chat. Ah, to be young again and not need sleep...

As for those shots...

As of right now I have decided to get a GameCube.

Back in the day, before E3, I decided that I was probably going to get all three consoles. I already got PS2 on launch. With the XBox's claims of high definition support (which looks like it will come in 720p form) I bought a Toshiba 40H80; I do not have any other HD material to watch. But lately I have not been playing games much (I blame it on a lack of software) so I thought I might only get one more console. I decided to get XBox, to take advantage of my big, beautiful television set. Then I saw those pics of Rogue Leader today. I am now firmly entrenched in the GameCube camp. Unless XBox starts showing all of their games running in HD I'm afraid they've lost a sale. They need some serious propoganda to counter those screens.

Where did you see that? Seriously, I'd like to read up on what would make the Xbox have such a hard time with this game.

Those are amazing but not as good as my Max Payne running on my GeForce3!!
Of course, your GeForce3 by itself cost more than a GameCube and Rogue Leader...

Well the XB cant handle this game for many reasons. One reason is the controller-the XB controller is not set up correctly (I know this is a cop out, but gimme a sec). Another one is the fact that the X-Box isn't as fast as the GC (the GC has no loading times at all, unless you count memory card data being loaded). The GC can also handle larger textures at higher resolutions and more of them than the X-Box. The bump mapping, the number of polygons (over 9 million a second), and the sheer quality of the game are unbeatable. From what I hear, none of the XB's first gen software already looks this good. Also, the GC is cheaper than the XB, and we have seen more from the XB than the GC and yet the GC still looks better.

I think that this is an essential question that I have not seen adressed anywhere!

The IGN article made no mention of this being through a progressive scan output, and since the most that the console will support is 480p, then I would assume these are standard definition shots. Next Generation mag had a cover story on Rogue Leader, and some of the Star Destroyer levels looked just as good:
roguejulyxp1.jpg

Again, what's stunning to me is that this is a FIRST GENERATION title. However this game plays, the fact that Factor 5 could make this title look that great for launch makes me salivate at the possibilities for Perfect Dark 2 and the next Zelda.

I was going to let you just slide on your grossly misinformed statement above, but this is just taking this a bit to far.
1) The NV20 (GeForce 3) has the nicest bump-mapping capabilities of any graphics accelerator ever created (well, potentially neglecting PixelFlow and R200... of course, PixelFlow is the complete opposite of consumer-level hardware, and R200 isn't available yet), and NV2A extends the NV20 feature set (not a great deal, but some). The screenshots you posted are simply diffuse bump mapping, or a simple N dot L calculation at every pixel. Nothing terribly fancy, and certainly well within the GeForce 3's capabilities. Hell, even the GeForce 1 can do per-pixel diffuse bump mapping + color map for a reasonable number of polys at a good frame rate.
2) The NV20 supports much higher texture resolutions than the Gamecube -- in fact, 4K x 4K textures can be used if necessary (4K x 4K x 32bits = 64MB, 8MB compressed). There are very few applications that call for 4K x 4K textures; however, I had an interesting algorithm I thought of the other day that would use them.
3) Programs on the GeForce 3 already render more than 12M polys/sec in full scenes, and the largest bottleneck is the AGP bus. The Xbox has much higher geometry throughput than the GeForce 3 (250MHz * 2 vertex shaders vs. 200MHz * 1 vertex shader), in addition to a much wider memory bus.
Now, you're entitled to your subjective opinion; however, your blanket assertions about what is and is not possible on the Xbox have always been false. There is no reason to propogate the misinformation that you have amassed.
