I rent and for the house I live in, my basic setup is an A/V Receiver (Sony DN-1040), two fronts, and a center speaker and sub. For most situations, I keep the settings in my receiver to only activate/recognize the front 3 speakers and sub. However, when I watch movies, I sometimes roll out surround speakers and activate them in the settings (it's impractical to keep them out).
My question is this: when my receiver gets multichannel surround from various sources, what does it do with it when I have the surrounds deactivated? Does it automatically down mix it? Or am I missing something and need to change some kind of other setting when I deactivate the surrounds?
Thanks.
