I’ve been looking into buying a Denon 3400 receiver but I’m not sure if it’s capable of doing what I hope. I’d like to run two separate zones using the same speakers. More specifically I want to run a 5.1 setup for the tv and a 2.1 on a separate input using the two tower speakers. Is this possible?

Why wouldn't you just change the receiver to stereo for music and surround for movies? I don't understand the need for a different zone in the same room.

I have a turntable next to my tv. I would obviously want surround sound for the tv but with vinyl you want a 2.1 setup. It would be silly to have separate speakers for the turntable and I would like to utilize the towers that are already going to be in place

Essentially I just want to turn off the center and back speakers when using the turntable, if that makes more sense? Don’t know how I can do that without having to unplug or reconfigure every time I change over

As Brian said, you would just set the mode on your receiver to 2-channel stereo if that's what you want when using your turntable. There's no need to run separate zones or reconfigure your speaker connections.

That's the purpose of an AVR, to use the built-in features to control the audio/video inputs and output in your desired format, be that anything from 2-channel stereo to Dolby Atmos surround.

Look on the bottom of your remote, you should have 4 different colored buttons. Select MOVIE for surround and MUSIC when you play the turntable. You can also set up the numbered buttons above the colored buttons to select the proper input for each activity.
