As a Technicolor milestone, I might pick this up, but I suspect I will find it dull beyond belief.

I saw the major restoration in 35mm when it was done and, yes, it is pretty dull. A milestone technically.

It will only seem dull to you if you are not a fan of 1930’s classic Hollywood historical dramas. Miriam Hopkins as usual is wonderful here, and the colour is dazzling.

It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read but hard to adapt and so they got a dull film

That's a generalization. I admire numerous 30's "historical dramas," (which are only sporadically tru-ish to history, as I am guessing this one is), such as QUEEN CHRISTINA, CLEOPATRA, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, etc.). Plus, I am only speculating that I would find BS dull, as the reviews of it mostly tend to lean that way, while applauding its visual beauty. I will know when I pick it up, and because I am paying good money for it, I obviously want to like it.

It's more a period satire, and they couldn't get the satire right.

I love this film and never have found it dull. Hopkins is wonderful and the supporting cast is top notch.

The restoration comparison video posted by the UCLA Film & Television Archive looks great!

It does. I'm hoping the new scan looks even better since that restoration comparison is 25 years old now!

Great interview. Jack doesn’t dumb it down for a vanilla audience. Seldom do I hear someone correct the term “two-strip!”

I was surprised they used the terms 2 strip and 3 strip. I got many snarky comments when I did when I first joined HTF.

Good education is all about reasonable explanation. Plus, I knew the audience that was listening to this would be hip.

Hearing someone say "two strip technicolor" is like nails on a chalkboard for me.

Wonderful interview Mr. Tweakson. Are there other articles or interviews about your other restoration work?
