It seems that the restored "Becket" is to be released on BD late November according to DVD Beaver.Good news that another classic is getting the high def treatment.

However, I have only seen a short clip of the recently released "restored " SD DVD and it looked pretty poor for something that was supposedly "restored" . While I'm not trying to pour cold water on the announcement, would any one who has the SD care to comment on how they think it will look on BD?

I have the SD DVD. I do have to agree that the image was only average at best, and I don't know how it will look on BD. But, it is one of my favorite movies, so I'll definitely pick this up when it comes out.

Okay, this has been out for a few years yet I don't see any news on it - is the blu ray a big improvement over the dvd ?

I don't know if it is an appreciable upgrade. The BD was taken from the same restoration. It may be the best it's ever looked, but the picture is soft and DNR was applied rather liberally. Still, it's a great movie and it doesn't look bad by any means.
Here's a comparison from DVD Beaver:

Great film with terrific performances by O'Toole and Burton! The Blu-ray is pretty solid, but could be better. As it is, there's a decent amount of filtering applied to it but not enough to diminish one's enjoyment of the film.

Now where's The Lion in Winter? :)

Don't think I ever saw a Mad Maagazine parody on it, but I remember SCTV did one of the funniest dead-on parodies of Becket I've every seen anyone attempt (with a bit of Cromwell and Lion in Winter thrown in):

i watched it a few weeks ago. i am more fussy about the grain, as opposed to other video issues. but i dont recall having any real video issues with it.

as i stated earlier, i had memories of being impressed with becket, and not so much with the king.

but in watching it now, i realize that those memories were all about my liking of the character, not the acting.

cuz peter o'toole did a wonderful job as the king, as well as burton did with becket.

in fact, i think the role of the king was a harder role to act.

that is one thing that is very easy to make a mistake about - separating the acting from the character the actor is portraying.

I don't know that I'd say the role of King Henry II is harder to act. It's certainly the flashier role and is the sort of things most actors love to sink their teeth into. Olivier played Becket on Broadway, and realized after starting work that he should have taken the part of the King. When Anthonly Quinn left the run to do Lawrence of Arabia, Olivier switched to the role of the King and Arthur Kennedy took on the role of Becket.

When I came to really love the film in my younger days, I was mesmerized by O'Toole as the King. Watching it now, I think I am more impressed with Burton's understated performance as Becket. So, I guess my experience is a reverse of yours!

from imdb quotes for Becket:

King Henry II: "Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?"

The case to BECKET says it was once lost. Was it really a "lost" film?

No.

Never lost.

The OCN is outside of the control of the rightsholder, as it was apparently shipped to a licensee in error, and never returned.

The current materials were produced from an analogue recomp of the sep masters.

It can look better
