Poor planning in a way, but considering that it probably wasn't an initial contigency that 2 Battlestars and 50K humans would be able to escape the overwhelming initial attack and then survive such a long distance. The RS was likely an emergency construction to chase the fleet into Deep Space since the Local Cylon soul recovery is likely done at a permanent on planet site.

Of course it could also be part of the "Plan" and it really isn't really necessary to the rescue of Dead Spylon souls from long distance and the destruction is only to give the Fleet a sense of false security.

Isn't it just a little suspicious that the Cylons wiped out the Caprican Human Base just hours before the Rescue party showed up?

It just occurred to me, and I don't think it's been discussed before, though this is a minor nitpick: the Galactica is no. 75, yet the Pegasus, ostensibly a newer ship, is no. 63. What gives? (Wikipedia suggests Galactica was amongst 2 or 3 battlestars that formed "battle group 75", which if correct explains the apparent discrepancy, but given that IIRC there were maybe only around 40 battlestars in total, seems unlikely.)

As an aside, IIRC CVN 75 is the Abraham Lincoln -- oops, Google search shows it's the Harry S. Truman. I wonder, any significance to that? And CV63 was the Kitty Hawk, now the longest-serving ship in the US Navy. If there was going to be an actual correlation/homage, then surely the Galactica should've been 63 since it was the old relic about to be mothballed.

Edit: Sigh, more checking reveals Pegasus was actually part of BSG-62, not 63. CV-62 was the Independence. Any thoughts?

OK on the ship , and hull numbers, first i don't think it is a direct correlation of the current navy, of any country, but as previously stated the Pegasus is 40 years younger, hence it while a battlestar in name might be a different class. Due to time it takes to build a ship, currently a Burke Class Destroyer takes 3 years, and that is the quickest turnaround.
But when the class changes so does the numbering system just speaking for the destroyers you have a little history lesson

all are the same thing but change on there configuration, and time that they were built, ultimately changing what they can do.

What is odd is the with all of this, we have these 2 Battlestars, but no Cruisers, Destroyers or Frigates, i know it is just a show, but in reality, a carrier, wheic i can only assume is the basis for the Battlestar leaves with a Battle Group. The easy way around them having any of the others in the show was made in the Miniseries and the first Pegasus episode. Glactica was being Decomed, , and Pegsus was in "The Yards" being worked on.
Now with all of this jumping back and forth in the past episode, my question is are they going to get off of there proverbial asses and go to the 11 other colonies for survivors, or is caprica the only thing that matters. what about the other ships with out ftl drives, jump back and look for survivors, you have the room now????

Didn't like the episode and it was way to incredulous. The tried to fit way to many story lines in this episode and everything seemed cut and rushed. After weeks of boring slow as anything character fleshing they suddenly realized they had to move the macro plots before the end of season. Nice.

Hate the USB port thing Boomer has now used twice. I had hoped they wouldn't go there again. The Cylons are medically the same as humans remember. Thats why they can't be detected apart from Baltars blood test. So them patching in with electronic devices and computers on the fly is very convenient. Kind of like a holodeck.

The whole rescue mission was flawed. The time to do it was when Starbuck first got back. Now an unknown amount of time has elapsed and all of a sudden we are dropped into the mission. How about a scene showing why Adama changed his mind? It's a pretty reckless mission even if your Marines are feeling bored.

The priest was interesting but the Chief pummeling Cally felt like it came from left field IMO.

That would be cool if Galactica came upon 1 or 2 escort ships (ie-cruiser,destroyer) and possibly a few civilian ships. Almost like a smaller version of the current fleet. I think another idea based on this. Is that one of the civi ships could have had a bunch of vipers and/or raptors. But, without pilots or facilities they could never use them. Or if they start to run out of pilots and/or regular crew. One of the civi ships could have a large group of Academy cadets that were on their way back to the Academy. Some would be new cadets, others would be seniors. Just an idea.

I was surprised that we did not see any advancement of the Caprica storyline this episode. We left Sex Mk I and Boomer Mk I with 36 hours before the murder of Xena was discovered and with Anders escaping. I don't see that story line as being complete so it really needs addressing in the Finale IMO.

Boomer Mk II being on the rescue mission deprives Adama of her opinion on if the Cylons know about the planet. The planet could easily be known, or a cylon staging point or even ...

the Cylon home world. It was rumored we would see it this season.

I'm also curious how Gina will play into things with that nuke that she and the peace nuts have.

Maybe Boomer MkII got the other ship to jump to the miracle planet by sending some controlling command out the handy USB port in her forearm? Perfect trap, while so much of the pilots gone, get the main fleet to settle in a trap.

And on an unrelated note, anyone else finding themselves making up lyrics when the title sequence is shown with its tribal mumbly chant?

Possible, though I'd guess they deliberately didn't increment the number, precisely because the baby is half-Cylon. Having said that, if anyone else in the fleet was paying attention, they might notice the discrepancy, since the cover story is that the foster mother who lost her baby in childbirth (or shortly thereafter) would be returning to her ship with a newborn, yet the fleet population had not increased.

Actually, considering what he was going through it didn't seem out of left field at all. Callie shot the woman he thought he loved and now he was going through horrible bouts of guilt and self-doubt and self-loathing. I think it is cool that they addressed this since it has been a dormant issue since he was returned after being imprisoned on Pegasus. Dormant isn't the word; pent up seems more apt.

Re: Risk of the Caprica Mission. Obviously, people that disagree with the mission on here are playing their own version of life vs. the one we live in. If anyone notices the professional career of military and rescue personnel they are always risking their many lives often to save less lives. Look at the Blackhawk Down scenario as one example. One gunship goes down in hostile territory. By all the arguments on here we should be saying, "feh, leave them behind...it is only a few guys." But that logic is thrown out the door when they send in everyone...and many more die than would have been lost if they gave up their gunship crewmembers. Is it logical? Not at all. Is it distinctly human? Absolutely.

It was revealed that there were tons of survivors making a go of it on Caprica, fleet morale continues to drop and, as noted in "Scar," the Cylons aren't attacking en masse any more (due to loss of Ressurrection Ship...which is apparently not as replaceable as everyone on here assumes it is). This makes for a perfect opportunity to conduct rescue operations. If successful, they can make a go of the other 11 colonies (possibly). If not, they can at least say they made the attempt. If successful they add needed bodies to a dwindling fleet (they already had the "can we survive with this genetic stock" discussion).

Remember, it was all volunteer. These men and women NEEDED such a mission and were apparently glad to try it. Yes, some of it is a stretch but fits the choices they are making in the environment that the writers have created.

It was cool.

I had no problem at all with the logic of the rescue mission. Just like Phil said, I thought back to Black Hawk Down. I'm not a military guy, but it was either in that book, or another I've read where the "leave no man behind" philosophy was explained. A military force MUST have that philosophy so that all of its soldiers will fight together. Without the knowledge that "the people above" will do everything they can to rescue you, the grunts would frequently abandon their mission to save their own skins when things got rough. I think it's an essential part of having a working system, even if it costs more lives to rescue lesser numbers. Again, not from personal experience, but it seems to make sense even when you apply it to military forces going back to rescue civilians. Committment to public service, honor and duty and all.

My point about the rescue was that Starbuck asked when she first returned and was denied by Adama. As an audience member I want to know why he changed his mind. Otherwise the story feels incomplete. All it would have taken was a line from Apollo saying "I'm glad my father changed his mind on this one ."

I'm also still unhappy about the crap (IMO) and slow episodes in the middle of the 2nd half of the season that could have been better used to help the setup for Friday.

I'm also of the opinion that if Moore is going to keep pulling the Cylon USB port out of his a** then he's going to have to start explaining it. I know he doesn't want to get into technobabble but if he is going to use it as a plot device then it needs explaining in some fashion IMO.

IIRC the previews for next weeks episode are not spoilers. Based on that I'm really wondering why Roslyn waits till after the election to start saying Baltar is working for the cylons.

Just curious, but why does it have to be explained?

My own take on it is that putting something like that under your skin, they could very easily communicate with it through their nervous system. Just because they look like humans doesn't mean they operate exactly like humans.

Because it doesn't make sense. If the Cylons are medically indistinguishable from humans then how can they communicate with computers by sticking a cable into their skin?

They could have shown Boomer interacting directly with the Cylon brain that controlled the Raider and I would have been fine with that. I still would have had a problem with the episode where she hooked up with the Galactica mainframe.

I work in Computers so this smacked as an ID4 situation where details like communication protocols are ignored for plot devices.

Even if she is able to communicate on an electron level with machines I still think the audience needs to be told something and not just have them assume it's magic or smoke & mirrors.

I agree. We know that Cylons are not human. We know they have the ability to "upload" their conscienceness (data) when they die (deactivate?). We've seen Sharon do the USB once before, so we know they can do it. Now we see her do it again so we know that it was not a "one off". Heck I think it was smart of the writers to have the Colonials take further advantage of Sharon's abilities.

I thought it was pretty clear in last week's episode: previously, a mission back to Caprica would have involved committing the entire fleet of civilians to get back there, mostly because the FTL capabilities of smaller ships is pretty limited. With Sharon's help and the Cylon Heavy Raider FTL computer, they were able to overcome that, and only need to commit a much smaller squad of Raptors.
