Battlestar Galactica Boxset and Battlestar Movie. (1 Viewer)

Got the Battlestar Galactica Boxset and Battlestar Galactica Widescreen movie for Valentine's Day (Thanks Honey!) Did a search but couldn't find a definitive answer.

But if I have the boxset do I need the movie? I heard a while ago that it was nothing more then a couple of episodes put together and edited for a theater release. Don't want to have a useless disc in the collection. I have not opened it yet and won't until I know for sure it is worth keeping.

its the first three hour episodes cut down to a 2 hr theatrical running time and matted for widescreen presentation.

imo, the first three eps are the better way to watch the material.

The presentation of the widescreen movie also leaves a lot to be desired, since it's non-anamorphic and "bare bones".

Just so you know, the widescreen version does include a few changes from it's TV counterpart. For example, in the theatrical version, Baltar is executed.

Still, "Saga of a Star World", included with the TV box, is the better way to view this material.

So ... Yeah! If I were you I'd exchange the widescreen movie for something else. (For example, it would make a nice down payment on the Firefly Complete Series box!)

Doesn't matter if it is anamorphic because widescreen is not the proper ratio, and since it's cut down from the actual broadcast episode that has always made it more irrelevant from my standpoint.

The boxed set is magnificent. The best TV on DVD release I have ever seen, along with the Dick Van Dyke Show, and in my case, even more special that this wonderful show got some respect in its DVD release (which is more than I can say for the treatment Universal is giving its reputation now).

it is cut, sure, but it is an alternate cut, since in this version, you can see Baltar dies.

I would keep both DVDs. As other people have stated, the theatrical cut is different than the TV version, the different scenes include Baltar's death, and as Starbuck and Apollo are flying above the planet near the end of the film, Starbuck has an extra line of dialogue that was mysteriously cut out of the TV version. Other than those two instances, the only other thing different is an alternate shot of the Galactica at the beginning of the film.

Also, I just wanted to point out that the theatrical DVD is not anamorphic.

I think another difference is some of the casino scenes are in a different order than in the TV presentation (when it was online, kobol.com had a comprenensive list of all the differences. I'm sure it's still floating around cyberspace somewhere).

By the way, John Dykstra was furious when he found out Universal intended to release the pilot theatrically, as it was never framed with a theatrical presentation in mind. When it came time to do the pilot for "Buck Rogers", they still shot it in 4:3, but composed the shots so they would be "widescreen-safe".

I'm just irritated that they released the big Cylon head box at first, then released a flat normal-sized tv show on DVD box later. Oh, how I'd love to just have the regular sized box since the giant Cylon head doesn't fit with any other DVDs.

It's even more annoying that the show's title isn't on the side of the box containing the discs themselves so then it doesn't work to just put that box on the shelf (and it wouldn't hold up anyway). So I just put them in a row where the height of the shelf is tall enough to accomodate the Cylon head set and then just put the next boxed set in line brushing against the head (I organize all TV shows in order of their year of debut so that means Taxi, Seasons 1 and 2 brush against the Cylon head)

Isn't the Baltar execution scene and those other small bits included in the boxset as deleted scenes? I was thinking of picking up this boxset (never seen the series before) and would like to watch both versions.

Yes, they are included as supplements. In fact you get about a dozen different raw takes of the "Baltar execution" sequence from different angles as well as how it appeared in the final theatrical version, so if the desire is to just see the scene itself, don't bother getting the theatrical version to see an inferior cut.
