I just a search on YouTube and found that footage by Adam Leibowitz. If it’s the one where Cain leads a squadron into the cloud to find two tankers, that was quite well done. i don’t keep up with the Galactica crowd, that’s very cool. Reminds me of the early days of when there was a few CGI artists trying to remaster Star Trek.

And I totally forgot that Anna Lockhart was in Galactica.

I found the Adam Leibowitz proposed new effects work to be far too busy with a lot of zooms, panning, tilting and fast POV shots. All a show like BSG really needed were more varied shots so it's not obvious that stock footage was being used after the first half of the pilot movie.

There's always a "showoffy" nature to these sorts of things. Instead of making it true to the original and getting the footage to look organic, they look like they were made decades later with all sorts of angles which would have been impossible to achieve with the rigs back then. The Star Trek TOS effects suffer from this as well.

The BSG blu rays were really very well done mostly because the DVD sets were excellent and they bonus features were ported over for the most part. The prints look great, really too good since the wirework in "Fire in Space" is incredibly obvious. The only thing that would have made it a dream project would have been to include the station break bumpers and released the full screen on their own instead of making them part of a wide screen release.

All that, plus the theatrical version of the pilot remastered. (The above-mnt'd Universal "Definitive Edition" sadly included only the old over-DNR'd Blu-ray of the movie. They could have easily remastered it using the 'new' episode scans, but chose not to).. Anyway, I know such a release is highly unlikely, but hey, one can dream.

But at least it included the low-frequency Sensurround track. ;)

Hey Scott, I agree about the Leibovitz CGI work. When I first saw it, it does look cool, but I also thought it felt video game like. And based on my re-viewing of the first episode, which I have not seen in many many years, I agree that the weakness of the effects was the re-use of footage over and over.

Guys, I know this is a thread about the Blu ray of BSG Definitive Collection OG blu rays Amd a defective 3rd disc. I could not help but watch not only the first Galactica episode, Saga of a Star World, but I felt compelled to watch the first part of the 2003 Battlestar Galactica re-imagined mini series last night right after.

I’d seen the original series in my very youthful days, enjoyed it, but never felt compelled to revisit it. I was a Star Trek fan! :) I liked it, I knew friends who made props and costumes. Then in 2004-2005, as I never had cable, I was able to watch the Ron Moore re-imagined Battlestar Galactica on blu ray and I collected that series to be able to watch it’s entire run. Being the Star Trek fan, it was interesting to see Ron Moore be able to tell some stories I’m sure he wasn’t able to in the restrictions of the Star Trek world.

After my viewing last night of both, it was interesting that both have their pluses. I found both were engaging but in different ways from different eras and different styles of story-telling. The TOS series does look firmly dated in the 1970’s disco era. It was tongue and cheek on some ways, I’d forgotten how Starbuck was played as such a swashbuckling character which was fun, and Apollo was the serious one. The 2003 mini series feels very dire and realistic. Which I’m sure Ron Moore and his partners wanted to do. I’m not sure how long I’ll stay engaged, but I’m currently engaged enough to feel the need to continue my viewing of both.

My memories of Battlestar Galactica TOS included the character of Cain played by Lloyd Bridges. I have not seen that episode in ages and that CGI footage reminded me of his character and Anna Lockhart. And in the re-imagined Galactica, Cain is recast as a woman played by Michelle Forbes. She was earlier cast as Ensign Ro in Star Trek TNG. So that was interesting to see her and I remember how she wasn’t a very nice character.

I could not find a Galactica discussion thread in a search, maybe I missed it. I’ll carry-on discussion of the shows on the What Classic TV shows did you watch thread.

You know what's funny? My love of original Star Trek opened me up to all manner of SF programming. I just wanted more. Thanks to Trek, I've got Space:1999, BSG, V, Lost in Space, Voyagem Buck Rogers and dozens of others on my list of favorite shows. Classic Trek will always be my all time favorite but it created a hunger for all TV sci-fi to a certain era.

Anyway, this is already dragging us way off topic!

I will pop in my WS of The Magnificent Warrior to see if I'm missing anything. I know I didn't bother withthe replacement program but I wonder if they would still honor it...?

Hey Scott, I think we’re just wired that way. I always gravitated to science fiction shows and films. I love the genre.

I’ll be curious what you find if you check out your disc of The Magnificent Warrior. If Universal still is honoring it, I’d be interested in a replacement disc at this late date for a set that is at least whole.

I watched it, it's a 45 minute long episode in Widescreen and I have no idea what's missing. I guess I would need to watch this one a second time in fullscreen to find out. It's not very good, so I dunno how anxious I am to do that....

Hi Scott. I understand one needs to be really motivated to rewatch an episode to check the differences. Thanks for checking it out! How was the widescreen by the way? Maybe I can Contact Universal via the address in the Digital Bits article below and see what happens:

‘There is missing footage during the episode, THE MAGNIFICENT WARRIORS, on disc 3 of the widescreen version of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA on both the Remastered Collection and Definitive Collection. The issue is being fixed and consumers can get a replacement disc by emailing[email protected]. Consumers should include, “Battlestar Galactica Classic Collection: BD” in the subject line of their email and the following text in the body of the email, “I would like to receive a replacement disc for (Disc 3, Episode “The Magnificent Warriors”).”
