Shouldn't they have fined the pitcher instead of the batboy??
I didn't think anyone deserved a fine.
I never heard of this dare, but at least it was milk instead of Jack Daniels.
It does seem like if anyone should be punished, it should be the adult for pressuring the kid, not the kid himself. I imagine it would have been hard for the boy to say no.
am i the only one who thought of batboy from national inquirer fame when they read the title?
Nope. Plus, Batboy is from Weekly World News, not the National Enquirer.
Anyone remember the MADtv skit with Will Sasso as Kenny Rogers doing an episode of Jackass(with real jackass members). On contest was drinking gallons of milk. Halfway through the competition(and before throwing up), Kenny Rogers said, "I was raised on the dairy, bitch"
That's what I meant by fining the pitcher. It's irresponsible.
I thought of the National Enquirier batboy upon reading the title, too.
Yeah, I was agreeing with you, as evidenced by my use of "it does seem... ".
They must have watched the show Inked (on A&E) last week. One of the owners bet one of the guy's that works in the tattoo gallery a thousand dollars he couldn't drink a gallon of milk in one hour. The guy drank the gallon of milk in ten minutes, but couldn't hold it down for the full hour, and lost the bet.
Isn't that because the stomach isn't large enough to hold the gallon of the milk, and the milk gets backed up into the esophagus, which is why it's hard to keep it down for an hour, and most people upchuck within the hour.
Sorry, bad posting on my part. My post was actually agreeing with you, but it was more directed toward Bryan who thought neither should be fined.
Let me try again
I agree with Chris that the pitcher (and the other guy) should be held responsible and not the batboy.
Gleaned from sports talk radio:
So, if you drink a gallon of milk on a bet, you get a 6-game suspension. You test positive for steroids, you get a 10-game suspension. Something's not right in the land of MLB.
I see nothing wrong with this bet, but the suspension? what a joke. It's a pitcher having fun with the other teams batboy, no harm "should" have come to this if the Marlins mgmt would get a life.
Hopefully Penny feels sorry about it and gives the kid the $500 anyway.
NO ONE should have been fined / punished
How old is the kid?
I hope Penny did/does something for the kid.
Patrick, the owners aren't going to lose any money if their "Star" batboy is out of commission.
That's how it is in the world of $PORT$ I know it doesn't say in the article, but if this happened on the grounds, I would say management has every right to punish anyone for any sort of 'betting'.
doh! That's true. I had not even thought of that.
If the kid is above 13, then a suspension might be ok (6 games though?)
under 13 and he probably does not know anybetter and just get the slap on the wrist.
Penny should still give the kid something.
Yeah, that's the only thing that didn't sit well with me. If it wasn't for the money, I would agree that it was pretty much a 'harmless' stunt.
Why isn't Penny also suspended for initiating the bet?
