Hey! I used to do that 10 years ago, I had my bass guitar but didnt had the AMP, I practiced alone in my teenager room following bass notes by ear: The Cure, Bauhaus, Metallica, Dead Kennedys (yikes) Sex Pistols, Iron Maiden, Kiss etc....
If you are just practicing and fooling around in your room, garage etc...is OK use a moderate volume.
Dont do it if you are going to practice with your fellow musicians or a gig, since guitars, keybords and other instruments will use pro amplifiers/speakers thus louder volume, and there will be a lack of bass so.... you will need the feel to turn up volume and will sound like a mess, also your sub will be so punished!
