Someone I know wants a DVD recorder to archive old family VHS tapes.

Aside from a combo unit, which I don't think exists, what would be a straight-forward model for a non-enthusiast to easily use? Price range from $300-$450...

Thank you...

Gateway has been hawking one for $300. (after $50 rebate).
Haven't heard from any users, but it seems like a perfectly useable basic model as per your needs. No internal hard drive. Format is DVD+R/+RW.

There is a Gateway Country Store about 2 min fom me and they have stacks of 'em piled in the front of the store.

The Philips DVDR 75 has served me quite well when it comes to copying my old VHS and 8mm videos.

Easy to use and in your price range.
