After moving into our new house last February, we had in mind finishing the basement and dedicating a room to a home theater.

We hired a contractor who began work in the last week of June. This project is now finished ofcourse, but I thought I'd show the pictures as the project progressed.

I can't add all pictures at once, so I'll start slow, at the beginning, and we can all make believe it's taking place in real-time. LOL

This monday some of the framing for the theater will get started. Right now, we're just going over some final tweeks and chalk lining the floor & walls. I may take a pic of the chalk lines for the theater, but I don't think anyone would be able to make heads or tails out of it.

Did more tweeking and talking than anything, but I'll try to keep this updated as frequently as possible.

This wall had to be squared up. It wasn't straight and had a big bow effect to it. The white sewer pipe & vents will be in a soffet which is illustrated in the elevation pic above. We're going to make a fake soffet on the right side ceiling of the theatre room for symmetry.

Some walls and such are starting to take shape.

The 1st two pics are of the area near my office, which is the other side of the basement. Right now, my computer and office stuff is in an upstairs bedroom. This will all be moved down to the new office room. It'll have a french door which will overlook the long room.

The other 4 pics is of the platform/riser for the theater/bar. Instead of constructing the back wall of the theater and then building 2 platforms, it seemed logical to build one big platform to specs (this is where alot of adjusting took place on Monday). The back & remaining side wall of the theater will be built right onto the platform.

As you'll see soon, there will be a wall built across that platform which will be the back of the theater. On the outside of theater, built right onto the platform will be the bar....more pics to come. Enjoy

Looks nice Scott,

Is your viewing area a separate room or is the whole basement all open?
Based on your layout sketch, it appears to be all open except for what looks like a wall along the side with your HVAC, water heater, etc.

What is your ceiling height?

Actually, from the pics, it's prolly hard to see, but there are 4 diff. rooms & several closet areas which are for storage or the HVAC/Water heater/Sump Pump.

My office, a collectibles room, lounge/bar area, and the home theater which will be it's own seperate room.

The theater has 2 diff. ceiling heights. The back row will be 88". The 1st row will be a little less than 9' (minus for carpeting height & drywall - figure 2" off). The projector will be mounted in the larger soffit area above the 1st row extending to the soffit which runs across & above the screen area.

More pics will show what I mean real soon...

Here is work from DAY 6. Enjoy the pics. This is really coming along now. Almost all the work from FRI was dedicated to getting the soffits for the theater room done. I'd say about 75% done now.

The front stage and columns for speakers need to get done now. They'll be space for the curtains to go behind the columns when opened.

DAY 7

All the sprinkler heads that needed correction have been moved as well as adding a few sprinkler into the newly created spaces as per fire code.

Framing is ready for finishing at this point & then we're onto the electrical, which will be quite extensive, mostly for the theater.

Been a few days since I last posted. The work has continued and the framing for the whole basement including theater is very close to completion. This coming week the electrical and lighting will be worked out and we are thinking that the place will be ready for dry-walling the following Monday...

All framework is now complete! woohoo!

We are just waiting for 2 permits to come back and then the electrical/plumbing inspection, which should happen w/in the next 7-10days.

There is some add'l electrical that needs to be done in the theater, which are the aisle lights. These were delayed for shipping, but should arrive next week. They'll be put in shortly after & then after inspection, the place begins to get drywalled!!! ohyeah:

All inspections & licenses are approved!!!

Just a few pics showing the drywall that was dropped off today. The ceiling will get done tomorrow, followed by the walls...then trimming, sanding, roughing out the bumps and stuff.

All drywalling should be finished by this time next week. Next on agenda after that will be trim work for doors, floors, vents, etc, along w/ a tile floor for the collectibles room.

Only final sanding, patching, and then priming for paint is needed. Trimwork should get started this coming week, which means doors and such + perhaps the collectibles room will get the tile laid.

Just adding more pics as this project is getting closer & closer to getting finished...

TIME FOR A MAJOR UPDATE!!!

Here is 18 new pics showing some MAJOR updates to the basement.

All the rooms except the collectible rooms are primed for their main color. All trimwork and doors are in and painted along w/ crown molding in the collectibles room.

Can't really show new pics of the theater room, as it was sealed off for painting the exterior room. Sorry. Next bunch for sure; this week!

Anyways, final painting should be done by weeks end. My contractor will then only have to finish the tile floor for the collectibles room & the bar area. Final trimwork and clean-up after that.

Carpeting should be done in about 4weeks. After that, the theater will get demo'd and tested and configured....This is sort of delayed a bit, because I've ordered the Mitsu HC5000 LCD 1080p projector instead of the HC3000 DLP 720p projector.

After or during all this, I'll start getting the display cabinets and shelving done to start prominently displaying my collectibles!!!

Scott,

I've been enjoying your post and I can't wait to see the pictures of the end result! I am surprised that with all the room down there that you didn't put in a bathroom. My plumbing was too high on the wall when I did my basement theater and I thought that might be your situation also. Although, I do see that you have a wet bar down there. Maybe plumbing low enough for sink drain but too high for toilet on the floor? Anyway, keep up with the post! I can't wait!

Well...I did want a bathroom, but space & then budget became an issue.

Putting a bathroom down there would have chewed up another $6k atleast, and w/ that, you have to deal w/ the potential of a leak or pump breakage down the road. From experience, they never work as good as your above ground toilets (from my other basement & friends houses who have one).

I had certain space allocated for all the rooms, so a 4'x6' bathroom became unnecessary real quick. I wanted as big a room as possible for my Collectibles Room, and that is where it would have needed to go as far as drainage and pipes. I didn't want to lose that space.

So, w/out being too lazy, myself, family, and guests will just have to go up the steps to the bathroom, which is just opposite the door that leads downstairs. Prolly a good thing ;P

We held off from painting the black in the theater and instead started laying the tile floor for the COLLECTIBLES ROOM.

Only half the tile I ordered was in stock, so we started w/ what we had and got about 66% of the room done. They'll also be an runner strip to the exit door @ the bar front along w/ the bar back using the same tile.

The tiles are 13"x13" each. The little square pewter tiles are 4"x4". This should give u a good idea of the dimensions of that room. Roughly 20' x 16'.

Tell me what u think of the tile & the design...

Trilogy - Everyone is going to like diff. stuff. Come back and remark again once you see the cabinets, track lighting, and other stuff in the room. I think in the end you'll like the room. I was a bit leary about it as well, which is why I added the 4" pewter squares. The squares will pick up some of the same color from the track lighting and the handles on the cabinets, as well as some chrome on other shelving.

Here is another 12 pictures just bringing everything up-to-date.

1-Applied 1st coat of black to theater room
2-Light plate switches, receptacles, light trim & bulbs placed in certain rooms
3-Curio cabinets installed at bottom of stairs before Collectibles Room.
