bananna plugs

I just bought some new heavy duty speaker wire this weekend for a two channel bi-wired setup. My question is this, are there different sizes of bananna plugs? The ones that came with the wire look like they are high quality but they wont fit no matter how hard I push. The plug itself screws on to the end of the wires, onto a gold pin/needle ( sorry dont know the technical word for it) and is split the length of the plug into four pieces. I tried pinching these together but ended up breaking a few of them off.

Are there different sized plugs?

Can I get replacements in this smaller size that will screw onto my existing wire?

Thank you.

Those sound like locking banana plugs. When fully expanded, there's no way you can push it into the binding post. You need to turn the body of the plug to retract the center pin, then they will fit. After you have them inserted, turn the body to lock them in.

I just kind of came to me that this could have been my problem. I knew I was missing something simple when cussing up a storm.

Thanks man..
