Think of it this way: If it is a well mastered version of the original theatrical soundtrack, why would you want them to take the risk of screwing it up via a remix? I don't mind 2.0 if it's good 2.0.

Studio Ghibli has on purpose not remixed any of their films for 5.1, nor do I think they ever will

And you want a 5.1 remix because...?

The original sound mix of this film is, as stated by others above, 2.0. I wouldn't want a 5.1 remix anymore than I'd want one for Casablanca.

It's in that retarded widescreen format, too — stupid black bars.

They really screwed up this release!

At least they've included the English audio track? What kind of nut would want to watch a movie in Japanese?

While I see your points, however I have been so accustomed to having 5.1 right off the bat that I immediately assumed that 5.1 would be an option...
and don't give me crap about black bars buddy, I am more than with the program and I DO watch my movies in Japanese dialogue with English subs.

Part of the reason is that it's very uncommon for companies to keep their elements, though Ghibli and Gainax DO

Several companies have had to literally re-record the ENTIRE track using (mostly) the original actors for their 5.1 (Gundam and Patlabor movies for example)

why does every dvd have to have 5.1?

you dont need 5.1 sound, you dont need dolby digital, or dts for grave of the fireflies. nothing in this world would lower the quality of a such fine movie.
