I was in the gym the other morning and on comes a song in an up tempo beat I knew I recognized. It was "IMAGINE" by John Lennon. I was horrified. The next day same thing. This time it's Pink Floyd's "The Wall". Aren't there any songs sacred?

On another note I thought they fit in the Ska catagorey but when I look up the definition it doesn't fit. What is Ska?

Bad remakes: The worst ever (in terms of not understanding the song you're singing)

Wilson Philips' cover of Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way.

A angry, "why are you doing this", breakup song, with the passion and bitterness completely and utterly bled out by this insipid, insulting and, frankly, revolting cover. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Ska is Madness, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, as examples. Fast beat, brass, fun [IMG]

I really like the APC cover of Imagine, FWIW.

bad remakes? ANYTHING by William Shatner....

While I agree that, musically speaking, Shatner's covers are terrible, they at least have the redeeming quality of providing something to laugh at. The Wilson Philips cover I mentioned doesn't even do that.

We Will Rock You by that shitty boy band, whoever they were.

The worst part was that Taylor and May were involved with it. Do they have no shame?

The best remake that comes to my mind:

Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton covering Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush".

Pink Floyd's "Childhood's End" was re-done very well by Becca & Pierre off the Fair Forgery of Pink Floyd album.

As far as one of the worst, Madonna pretty much killed "American Pie" for me.

All-time worst: Britney Spears' "I Love Rock 'N' Roll". She doesn't do a damn thing for me in terms of looks or music and this was easily her lowest point. She doesn't know the first thing about rock 'n' roll.

O/T: Why are so many musicians referred to as "rockers" when they are, in fact, teen pop stars or rappers or country artists or other things unrelated to rock as defined by The Beatles or Pink Floyd or Iron Maiden or even Nirvana (I don't like them, but they are rockers)?

    Sincerely,

    John Kilduff...

I'd like to see Pink do some covers, though. That's a younge female singer who CAN rock with the best of them.

That Jessica Simpson cover of "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin is absolutely atrocious. She completely mangles the chorus hook and overemotes to the point of laughability...

I think Maddy's "Pie" is just fine. Then again, I never much liked the original.

However, as much as I love Madonna, I didn't like her cover of "Imagine" on the last tour. Totally lifeless. It's not that I hold the song "sacred" - honestly, it's a decent tune but radically over-rated. It's that her rendition was dull, dull, dull...

Best way to discribe SKA is Punk with a reggae type beat plus horns added, at least from what I have or heard.

10cc's song I'm Not In Love, originally about a guy denying he is in love although he clearly is, was covered by The Pretenders in the early 90's and they turned it into a woman empowering shutting out of men's affection...I always hated that.

There is a site that has a rather good list of covers and originals called Second Hand Songs.

Do you mean the song Another Brick in the Wall Part II?

Another cover I thought was bad was Brittney Spears I Can't Get No (Satisfaction). Truly sacrilege.

...how quickly people have forgotten that little tart, Tiffany, crapping on Tommy James song I Think We're Alone Now! Tsk-tsk![IMG]

Ska came first - reggae developed from it, though most people think it happened in reverse. That sounds more logical, since ska feels like a more commercial spin-off from reggae. But that's the way it occurred!

Didn't Vanilla Ice once cover "Satisfaction"? That's worse sacrilege - at least Brit's sexy!

Let me add No Doubt's version of Talk Talk's It's My Life. Makes me want to throw my stereo out the window everytime I hear it. Nothing quite like listening to a crap band crapping on a good song.[IMG]

Thanks a lot Rachael. I had quite successfully forgotten that little bit of musical horror, until now. [IMG] [IMG]

Boy that song was covered a lot! I enjoy the cover by the long lost group Will To Power AND by the trip-hop group Olive (not the remixes but the album version). Tori Amos does a respectable version.

Unfortunately Enrique Iglesias also covered it.[IMG]

I don't like the new covers on the radio of: "Behind Blue Eyes", "Give A Little Bit", and whoever does the remake of "In Your Eyes". And I second the Britney cover. [IMG]
