I am brand new to this forum, new to combined music/HT setups, and would welcome any advice you might be able to give me about my recent entre into budget audiophile sound and HT.

After 25 years of living with a ceiling-mounted Bose 901 Series VI system with NAD 3045 amp and NAD 5240 CD player, I have bought and have begun to enjoy a set of B&W 601 S2 speakers. The realistic imaging and clarity that they offer over the Bose is quite a change for me, as is their dramatically reserved sound as compared to the Bose, but the positive incremental change is generally good. I had also picked up a basic HT system at a garage sale of Sound Dynamics RTS3 speakers, Sound Dynamics THS 3000, sub and THC 1 center speaker, a HK AVR, and Pioneer CD player - all for $25! That system is not all that clear, but it at least weened me off of the Bose sound that I had adapted to after so many years. All these new sonic opportunities have whetted my appetite for good clean sound that has lain dormant for many years. but the change has been intriguing and fun.

I've been considering a B&W 608 8" subwoofer for my system, and wonder if anyone has any experience with this sub? I listen to mostly music (jazz, blues, rock, acoustic), but I'm also now assembling a modest but hopefully clean 5.1 surround system. I now have B&W 601 S2 speakers, the B&W CC6S2 center, Sound Dynamic RTS3 rears, Sound Dynamics 10" down-firing sub that is quite boomy, and a Denon 1911 AVR receiver. I also have a modded AR XA turntable with Grace 707 tonearm, Grado Gold cartridge, and about 1000 LPs on my shelf. I will be ordering the new Oppo 93 when it comes out as my player for both DVDs and Cds, so general audio quality is important to me. My apartment living room is 15' by 15', and I have neighbors underneath me and on one side. I know that this 8" side firing sub will clearly not have earth shaking bass, but for my purposes, might it be enough to fill in the bottom end for music and general movies, or is a 10" B&W or other maker's sub a better bet? Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated by this budget-conscious 57 year old guy with reawakening ears. Thanks!

B&W makes a great speaker but the sub is not worth the price. To match the quality of the speakers you are using I suggest one of the subs from SVS. One of the sealed 12" drivers would be great.

Better than that, a DIY sub with a low distortion driver would be better. A 10" or 12" driver with XBL^2 low distortion technology in a 2 cubic foot enclosure powered by a 500w amp would sound awesome. Perfectly clean and undistorted sound.
