I was searching through the extended features on Kung Pow: Enter the Fist, and I was stunned to see how much time and effort went into this DVD; three separate audio tracks (one commentary, one 'original' soundtrack, and the 'Book on Tape Version' which is the movie dubbed over with a stuffy English accent), extended scenes, deleted scenes, TV spots, trailers, and a whole lot of other little stuff.
But then I thought "Who's gonna watch all this stuff?? The movie is horribly unfunny!" Sure, there may be a million 11-year-old boys who may love this movie, and that's just great, but it always surprises me a bit when such a resounding box-office dud (and generally crappy flick) gets such an extensive DVD treatment.
Pearl Harbor certainly falls into this category as well.
So tell me: What are the WORST movies - that are also damn good DVDs?

Independence Day--the Big Dumb Movie incarnate. The DVD is reference-quality--and I would never have known had I not received a free copy. Watched it once (all I could take), and the transfer was stunning. The movie is still piss-poor, though.

    Vertical Limit!
And I completely agree with Pearl Harbor. I bought this on DVD simply because the video and sound were reference quality (after renting it via Netflix), knowing the movie sucks! But, my wife liked it anyway, so that helped justify the purchase too.

I'll third Pearl Harbor. What a waste! I'll add Planet of the Apes (2001) and... Armageddon (sorry Scott)!

    I agree about Pearl Harbor.
I bought the 4-disc edition for my father for his birthday. When he saw the package, he said he wondered why such a bad movie got so many extras. [IMG]

I'd still consider TPM DVD to be a fantastic DVD. The transfer is good. It definitely is not a poor transferIn fact, I'd rate it at least a four out of 5. The only flaw I see is the EE. I don't see any softness on my setup. Take away the EE and the transfer would be reference in my opinion. And the extras are fantastic.

    Definitely Planet of the Apes.

    Terrell,

you're absolutely right about the technical aspects of The Phantom Menace DVD. The only thing you failed to do is admit the movie sucks Bantha-poodo, hence my including it in this thread.

Thirteen Ghosts, incredible sound mix and flawless video. The "ghost files" are pretty fun, too...

One of the first DVD reviews on this board when I was a new member.
Thanks a heap for Driven, Ron!
You owe me $17 and 2 hours (but I'll credit you a bit for all the PG-13 hotties).
I don't mind PH - and it's a great DVD set. I also agree on ID4 - my wife loves it, except when I laugh[IMG] But people in glass houses...
    Take care,
    Chuck

Ooooh, good call Chuck! How could I forget Driven. Actually, now that I think about it, I could I remember Driven!?
This movie was a complete slap in the face to racing fans everywhere. What a complete piece of crap!
I don't think Ron will ever hear the end of this one! [IMG]

I'd have to go with Episode I. The movie's horrid, but it's one of my favorite DVDs.

    [*]Resident Evil[*]Final Fantasy[*]Fast and the Furious[*]Don't Say a Word[*]Mallrats[*]Scary Movie 2[*]Little Nicky[*]Blow[*]Hollow Man

I can go on and on...

Maybe somebody can start up a reverse thread ("Fantastic movies that end up as awful DVD's")...I'm sure people have at least one entry each for that category.
