I’ve read that some AVRs can’t process HDMI audio and send it out to the speakers. They simply pass it on to the TV. I’m looking to upgrade my HT system with a new AVR and Blue Ray player but I want to be sure my AVR will drive my surround speakers as well as send out full 1080p to my LG HDTV when I’m using my Blue Ray.

If I get an AVR that doesn’t process HDMI audio can I use digital audio from my blue ray in conjunction with the HDMI for the video?

Thanks,
Dan

Yes you can. I suggest you download the manual from the receiver(s) you are looking at to determine exactly what they are capable of.

Also remember, that if you do get a receiver that doesn't handle the HD audio and you have to bitstream over Coax or Optical that you will only be hearing the legacy audio codecs in the stream (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc. instead of Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, etc.).

I took your advice and downloaded the manual for the ONKYO TX-SR606, that's the AVR I am considering. It sounds like it'll do what I'm after but it doesn't explicitly say HDMI audio will play through the speakers.

Does anyone know if the 606 will do it?

Yes, the 606 is an HDMI 1.3 receiver, which will handle everything from LPCM to TrueHD/STS-HD/MA over the HDMI connection. If you purchase that receiver, you are go to go for all HD audio.
