I am wondering whether my older H-K avr 7000 will recognise and play a sacd bitstream . I'ved tried to use the optical input and the analog inputs with no success. The manual does not mention anything about high resolution signals so I don't know if the problem is old technology or what. If it won't play sacds then what about dvd-a's ? Any help would be great!

Duane: SACD and DVD-A are highly protected formats. Most players made do not output any signal through the digital output. There are a handful of exceptions but thus far, they have been proprietary. Denon has a direct link between their best player and receiver, as does Pioneer with a couple of their best players and receivers. Sony has their own setup too for their best stuff.

Bottom line is that for you to get SACD or DVD-A with your units such as your HK, you need to use the 6 channel analog connections on a high res player and run them into a like 6 channel input on a receiver or pre/pro.

My dvd player does support sacd & dvd-a. I have also tried using the six channel analog output from the dvd player run into the six channel input of the H-K. still no sound.

    WHAT PLAYER ARE YOU USING?

As noted, there is no bistream for your receiver to recognise. This means there are two possibilities 1) you don't have your player configured properly for SACD/DVD-A or 2) you have not selected the correct input on your receiver to listen to the source.

No only for copy protection, but coax and optical digital connections are not used because they do not have the bandwith to transfer the digital stream of these formats.

On the H-K I selected analog as the input from the dvd player and the dvd player is a Pioneer model DV-563A which can play sacd and dvd-a. The only way I get sound is if I switch the player to CD Area and it will play 2 channel stereo.

    Greg is right on.
Don't select "analog", select ext. in or 6 ch. direct or whatever the name is on your receiver.

Yes, analog would mean the 2 channel analog RCA input.

By any chance, do you also have the stereo analog connections hooked up?

Beware of the DSoTM disc. It is notorious for cracking due to a manufacturing defect (center hub). Keep an eye on it.
